DALLAS--()--Susan G. Komen® is empowering Hispanic/Latina women across the country to take an active role in their health and the fight against breast cancer by joining the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) as a charity partner during the 2014 NCLR Annual Conference, held July 19 – 22, 2014, in Los Angeles.

NCLR – the largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States – works to improve opportunities for Hispanic/Latino Americans in five key areas, including health. This partnership creates an opportunity to engage leaders from across the country and address breast cancer disparities that affect Hispanic/Latina women.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are about 50 million Hispanic/Latino Americans in the United States. This large and fast-growing population is disproportionately affected by breast cancer. An estimated 17,100 cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in Hispanic/Latina women in the U.S. in 2012, the latest year available; and 2,400 were expected to die of the disease. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Hispanic/Latina women in the U.S.

On July 20, Komen will host Latinas: Be the Voice in Your Community and Take Action against Breast Cancer – a panel discussion and workshop designed to discuss cultural barriers that Hispanic/Latina women face, educate about effective community programs, and encourage attendees to get involved in their communities and take control of their own health.

The panel discussion will be moderated by NBC4 Southern California reporter and breast cancer survivor Lolita López. Joining López for this important discussion will be:

  • Rosario Quintanilla: Public Affairs Specialist for the Food and Drug Administration – Los Angeles District Office and longtime volunteer of Komen Los Angeles County
  • Sonia Briseno: two-time breast cancer survivor and Komen spokesperson, featured in the “I Am Susan G. Komen” campaign
  • Ambrosia López: Community Outreach and Education Manager at Komen Orange County
  • Lisa Barceló: Program Coordinator for the Komen-funded Esperanza y Vida Project at Quinn Community Outreach Corporation
  • Teresa Blanco: Viva La Salud Wellness Manager at Northgate Gonzalez Market

“Komen and our global network of Affiliates are dedicated to meeting the needs of women and men in their communities today, while working and investing in a brighter future. We are pleased to work with NCLR to educate and engage attendees from across the country to address breast cancer issues affecting Hispanic/Latina women,” said Rhasheda Boyd, director of marketing at Komen.

This panel discussion is the latest in Komen’s ongoing efforts to educate Latino communities to address breast cancer disparities. To date, Komen has invested more than $89 million in more than 250 community grants to address breast cancer disparities.
