PITTSBURGH--()--Power management company Eaton today announced it provided the Third Taxing District of East Norwalk, Connecticut, with electrical engineering services and power distribution equipment for the construction of a new electrical substation facility. Located at 6 Fitch St., the substation will help the district lower the cost of electricity while enhancing grid stability and meeting growing demand from residents and businesses.

“By establishing a direct connection to the transmission system, the substation is making power more reliable and affordable for East Norwalk,” said Jim Smith, Third Taxing District’s General Manager. “Eaton’s utility expertise and engineering capabilities allowed us to establish a lasting solution while maintaining our aggressive project timeline, so we can begin benefiting from utility savings upwards of $500,000 a year.”

To optimize safety and reliability, Eaton’s Electrical Engineering Services and Systems division helped the district design, install and commission the substation. Completed in December 2013, the project was the first new substation constructed in the district since 1980.

“East Norwalk’s Third Taxing District project is helping modernize an aging power infrastructure and addresses increasing energy costs to provide more reliable, affordable service for customers,” said Bill Miller, global marketing director at Eaton. “Backed by more than a century of power management expertise, Eaton was well positioned to help the district establish high-quality power within an adaptable, secure and responsive infrastructure.”

Power management solutions from Eaton and other manufacturers are incorporated in the design of the Fitch Street Substation to safely and reliably reduce incoming voltages from two primary utility power transmission lines. Transformers efficiently scale voltages from dual 115 kilovolt (kV) source lines, while providing robust circuit protection and fire resistance to reduce the risk of unplanned outages. Eaton disconnect switches enable substation components to be de-energized to enhance the safety of routine maintenance and are designed to prevent equipment damage when upstream problems are identified.

The Third Taxing District encompasses all of East Norwalk. The District operates an Electric Department that provides high service, reliable, low-cost electricity to East Norwalk residents and businesses. It also owns and maintains several mini parks, as well as the East Norwalk Historical Cemetery, Firehouse and Association Library. TTD is governed by a Board of three Commissioners elected by the residents to 6-year terms, with staggered terms. To learn more, visit www.ttd.gov.
