MCLEAN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Octo Consulting Group, a leading provider of innovative technology and management consulting services, received the Washington Business Journal (WBJ) Jefferson Award for 2014 Corporate Philanthropist of the Year during the The Washington Business Journal Corporate Philanthropy Awards held Thursday morning, June 19, 2014.
“We never imagined that our commitment to philanthropy could lead to such an honorable recognition,” said Octo President & CEO Mehul Sanghani. “Connecting with our community is such an integral part of Octo’s culture and we encourage our employees to work on impactful projects both inside and outside of the workplace.”
In 2013, Octo Consulting donated upwards of $10,000 to more than 39 different charities. Each employee of the company was given $750 to donate to the charity of his or her choice. In addition, employees logged over 900 hours of community service. What’s more, in an effort to combat literacy gaps among school age children in the D.C. area, Octo spearheaded the largest book drive in D.C.’s Ward 7 to make educational books more accessible to students. Octo partnered with nonprofit organizations Fit Book, Project 7 Refocus, the Ward 7 Education Council, community groups and other civic associations to build a coalition that could make sustainable change in the community, and also trained community members and developed a project plan that will serve as an instruction manual for future book drives.
Each year, the WBJ Corporate Philanthropy Awards honor businesses in the Greater Washington area that are ranked on its Corporate Philanthropy lists based upon prior year giving. The awards honor the region's most active and inspirational companies and nonprofits that have made a difference in their communities through both financial and volunteer philanthropic work. The categories of recognition include: The MassMutual Citizenship Awards, the Washington, D.C. region’s Jefferson Awards for Public Service candidates, and the Corporate Philanthropy Honorees.
The Jefferson Awards for Public Service are a prestigious national recognition system honoring community and public service in America. The Jefferson Awards are presented on two levels: national and local. The mission of the Jefferson Awards is to encourage and honor individuals for their achievements and contributions through public and community service.
Octo Consulting was also nominated for the Fairfax Chamber Outstanding Corporate Citizenship Awards for Outstanding Corporate Citizen of the Year in the Mid-Size Business category. These awards honor individuals, businesses, and non-profits for above-and-beyond business leadership, employee engagement, and corporate social responsibility.
