MIRAMAR, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM) conferred medical degrees at its annual commencement ceremony held at the BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Florida, Friday, June 13. Richard H. Carmona, M.D., MPH, FACS, who served as U.S. surgeon general from 2002–2006, delivered the keynote address.
The RUSM Class of 2014 is a diverse group with graduates representing 46 states, nine Canadian provinces, and more than 40 countries.
“It’s gratifying to see the wide reach of Ross University School of Medicine, which gives us all a sense of pride in our ability to touch the lives of so many individuals who have the dream to become physicians,” said Joseph A. Flaherty, M.D., dean and chancellor. “I look forward to seeing the impact these new Ross alumni will have around the world in the communities that they will serve.”
Dr. Carmona is a member of the board of trustees of RUSM and a distinguished professor at the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona. After dropping out of high school, Carmona went on to become a combat-decorated U.S. Army Special Forces Vietnam veteran, who trained as a general and vascular surgeon and as a public health professional. In his keynote address, Dr. Carmona urged the graduates to think globally when considering their potential impact as health professionals.
“You enter a world that anxiously awaits you. Health diplomacy is a tool to make the world a safer place, and you have a role to play in helping to extinguish health disparities,” he said. “You are our future. Go change the world.”
