LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--CH2M HILL celebrated the official opening of two new Park & Ride sites in York today following their involvement in the delivery of the city’s major new transport project.
The UK’s top Park & Ride service saw two new sites and a fully electric fleet of buses formally opened by Councillor David Levene, Cabinet Member for Transport at York Council, this morning. In partnership with First Group, the new sites will further increase York’s portfolio to six; making this one of the largest Park & Ride facilities in the UK. The two new sites will increase the parking capacity to 1,100 vehicles at Askham Bar and introducing a new 600-vehicle facility at Poppleton Bar.
CH2M HILL has played a major role in the £22.7 million project, carrying out the preliminary design, detailed design, contract procurement and construction supervision at both sites. As part of this role, CH2M HILL carried out land remediation, environmental consenting and interaction works on the rail and road networks for the Askham Bar site as well as the development of a sustainable drainage system and significant upgrading works to the local highway infrastructure at the Poppleton Bar site.
Ian Kirkpatrick, Associate Director for Land Development and Regeneration at CH2M HILL said: “The formal opening of these two sites marks a significant day for York’s transport network and one of the UK’s most advanced Park & Ride schemes. CH2M HILL has been involved throughout the project lifecycle and has carried out work across a variety of disciplines to deliver this project on schedule. Both Askham Bar and Poppleton Bar will provide welcome additional capacity to the existing network, whilst alleviating congestion on York’s roads.”
Cllr David Levene, Cabinet Member for Transport at the City of York Council, said: “The £22.7m project represents one of the largest single investments in York’s transport infrastructure since the northern ring road was built in the 80s. This has been our stated priority for the last three years and builds on our existing portfolio of Park & Rides sites. This is critical for York’s future economic prosperity and environmental wellbeing and we are delighted to be delivering this major improvement today.”
