HANOVER, Germany--()--The profile of the tyre is visibly depleted, a replacement is long overdue: whoever dismisses this situation with a shrug and postpones the necessary tyre change repeatedly endangers himself and others. For a poor profile can quickly lead to dangerous situations in traffic. In sudden braking or evasive maneuvers, the vehicle could skid. What many motorists do not know: technical defects of the vehicle can even lead to points on their driving record at the Federal Motor Transport Authority in Flensburg (Germany) - even after the entry of the point’s reform, which came into force on May 1st, 2014.

Penalty points for lack of tyre tread

Who are caught at a police check with "slick" tyres, had to reckon with a fine of 50 euros in the past. With the new regulation in force since May 1st, the fine has been increased to up to 75 euros, connected to a point in Flensburg. Motorists should note: A single point now affects the penalty record much stronger, because with eight points the driver's license is temporarily confiscated.

"Technical defects of the vehicle as far as the tyres are concerned are not a trivial offense. Insufficient tyre tread depth cannot be excused by ignorance or neglect. It can in the contrary have fatal consequences on the road," underlines Philip Grolman of ReifenDirekt.de. He refers to the uniform European regulation scheme which requires a tread depth of 1.6 millimeters for summer tyres. It is better however to replace summer tyres already when a tread depth of 3 millimeters is reached; winter tyres at 4 millimeters, Philip Grolman continues. "A worn out profile can not only extend braking distances, but also adversely affect the driving stability of your vehicle." The simplest way to check the tyre tread is with a 1 Euro coin. If the gold brim disappears in the tread, the tyre may still be driven.
