Canadians Pitch in to Provide over Eight Million Days of Clean Water to Those in Need

Socially-minded Canadians provided clean drinking water by purchasing P&G products at Walmart Canada as part of year-long campaign

TORONTO--()--P&G and Walmart Canada are proud to announce that caring Canadians joined in the cause this April to help combat the global drinking water crisis. As a result, P&G will donate more than 8.6 million days of clean water to the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Fund as part of its Clean Water initiative launched in partnership with Walmart on April 1. This initial success boosts the campaign to over one third of its year-long goal of 25 million days of clean water.

Canadians rallied in support of the approximately one billion people in the developing world* who do not have the luxury of clean drinking water, recognizing that diseases from contaminated water are killing more children every day than HIV/AIDS and malaria combined*. To help combat this global issue, during the month of April, P&G pledged to donate one day of clean drinking water** for each of its products purchased at Walmart and Walmart.ca to the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Fund. The Canadian initiative supports P&G’s goal to save one life every hour by 2020 through the provision of two billion litres of clean water each year.

“I am overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and support my fellow Canadians have shown for the Clean Water initiative,” said Jason Priestley, Canadian actor and clean water advocate. “However, there is still more to do and there is no limit to P&G’s donation, so I hope every Canadian will continue to support this important work that helps save the lives of children and families in the developing world.”

From May 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015, each purchase of a selection of more than 20 P&G products including Tide, Pampers, Duracell, Dawn and Pantene*** in Walmart stores and at Walmart.ca will also generate a donation equivalent to one day of clean drinking water.

“Lack of clean drinking water is a global crisis with illnesses from contaminated water killing more than 1,600 children every day,” said Allison Tummon-Kamphuis, P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program leader. “April’s campaign made a big step toward our Canadian campaign goal to provide 25 million days of clean water by March 2015, and we are looking forward to Canadians continuing the overwhelming support they have already shown.”

The Children's Safe Drinking Water Program uses P&G water purification packets, a water purifying technology developed by P&G to help reduce sickness and death resulting from drinking contaminated water. One small P&G water purification packet turns 10 litres of potentially deadly water into clean, potable water. Over seven billion litres of clean drinking water have been provided by humanitarian organizations across the globe using P&G packets, including CARE, PSI, Save the Children and World Vision helping to save an estimated 39,000 lives in more than 75 countries.
