SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--By the time Assemblywoman Toni Atkins steps before the Sacramento Press Club at noon on Wednesday, May 21, she will be the new Speaker of the California Assembly. Atkins, a Democrat who spent eight years on the San Diego City Council before being elected to the Assembly, is the first openly gay woman to serve as Speaker.
As Majority Leader, Atkins is already responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Assembly floor and has served as a member of current Speaker John A. Perez's leadership team. She has long advocated on issues such as affordable housing for veterans and reducing homelessness.
Atkins will deliver keynote remarks and take questions during the lunch, which is also the Sacramento Press Club’s annual venue for awarding $34,000 in scholarships to seven college students who are pursuing careers in journalism.
Anthem Blue Cross is hosting the winning students, their families, the award judges and the scholarship honorees for the event, and the company’s gift also will make a substantial contribution towards next year’s scholarships.
The lunch, from noon to 1:15 p.m., will take place at the Capitol Plaza Ballroom, 1025 Ninth Street, 3rd Floor, Sacramento.
Doors open at 11:30 a.m. Tickets, $29 for members and $40 for non-members, may be purchased at www.sacpressclub.org. The RSVP deadline for the Wednesday lunch is 5 p.m. Monday, May 19.
