SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--At the ninth annual San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) Energy Showcase event today, Irvine Company Office Properties was honored by SDG&E as the Energy Grand Champion for 2013 for its outstanding results in energy efficiency and conservation.
Irvine Company Office Properties was honored for enhancing its commitment to saving natural resources by implementing an energy savings plan that has resulted in substantial savings by providing energy-efficient workplaces for customers. The company saved 3.2 million kilowatts, 75 thousand therms and 19 million gallons of water in San Diego County in 2013.
The company, San Diego’s leading provider of office workspaces, conducted a heating, ventilation and air conditioning enhancement that included the installation of high-efficiency boilers, variable-frequency drives and an optimized control system. LED and low-watt fluorescent lighting was widely substituted for outdated lighting fixtures, and a new SDG&E sensor automation pilot program has been implemented for efficient lighting control. The company has seven electric vehicle charging facilities at its San Diego properties with plans to add four more in 2014 and six more identified for 2015-2016.
“Every year we see our customers continue to set the bar higher for energy savings and conservation, and the customers who have been recognized as Energy Champions this year have set an incredible example for all local businesses to follow,” said Caroline Winn, vice president of customer services for SDG&E. “We look forward to continuing to help our business customers find new ways to save energy and money through the many rebates and incentives that are available through SDG&E’s energy-efficiency and demand response programs.”
Irvine Company owns and operates a portfolio of nearly 8 million square feet of high-rise and campus office workplaces in downtown and the University Towne Centre area, making San Diego its second-largest market after its historic base of Orange County. The company is California’s largest LEED portfolio owner with more than 50 LEED certified office buildings ― 18 in San Diego, including six silver, 11 gold and one platinum.
As an advocate for energy-efficiency, Irvine Company Office Properties hosts six annual green fairs each year pulling in on average 20 booth participants per show, including SDG&E, a regular participant. The fairs promote energy conservation programs through public transportation and carpool, electric vehicle charging stations and recycling.
“Stewardship of natural resources has been part of Irvine Company since it was founded and is a fundamental part of the legacy and culture we live today,” says Richard Dishman, Irvine Company Office Properties director of engineering for downtown San Diego. “Our customers pay lower utility costs per square foot. When they’re in a higher quality building with lower utility costs, it’s a huge benefit to them.”
Irvine Company Office Properties takes pride in its thoughtful stewardship and commitment to sustainable practices. The Environmental Protection Agency named the company an EPA Green Power Partner for its investment in U.S.-based renewable power in support of its LEED certification effort. The EPA also recognized the Irvine Company as the only 2013 ENERGY STAR Commercial Real Estate Leader/Top Performer in California.
