DENVER--()--LiveWell Colorado, a nonprofit organization committed to preventing and reducing obesity in Colorado, kicked off the 2nd annual statewide Colorado Get Movin’ Challenge today, motivating thousands of Coloradans to commit to daily physical activity as part of a healthier lifestyle.

The Colorado Get Movin’ Challenge, sponsored by Kaiser Permanente and supported by Gov. Hickenlooper, provides free online tools to encourage Coloradans to make a concerted and collective effort toward being active during May, with the goal to engage in physical activity for 30 minutes a day for 30 days. Anyone age 14 and up can participate for as many days as they like, doing whatever activity they like – incentives are given at three different levels – and all the minutes tracked will contribute to the state’s accumulated total. The 2013 statewide Challenge attracted more than 8,000 participants.

New this year is a competition between cities and towns across Colorado for the bragging rights of being the most active Colorado city. Participation will be tracked so rural and mountain communities are on a level playing field with larger cities like Denver or Colorado Springs.

Registration is now open at GetMovinChallenge.org and partner site, MapMyFitness, where people will log their daily activity. Official activity tracking for the Challenge runs May 1 to May 30. After signing up, people can easily log their time spent doing any physical activity, as well as share their progress with friends on social media. The site will aggregate the total number of minutes that Coloradans are active during May.

“LiveWell Colorado is proud to bring back the Get Movin’ Challenge with the support of our great partner, Kaiser Permanente. During the 2013 Challenge we witnessed Coloradans young and old learn that being active can become a fun, accessible and deliberate part of the day, no matter the activity,” said Gabriel Guillaume, Interim President & CEO of LiveWell Colorado. “The 2014 Get Movin’ Challenge is Colorado’s chance to once again prove that we are the most active state in the nation, and I am personally excited to get started along with my friends and colleagues across the state.”

Colorado Get Movin’ Challenge participants will receive frequent motivational support, tips and reminders throughout the Challenge, and will be eligible for various prizes based on the number of days they participate, and log their activity in MapMyFitness, over the month-long period. People who have completed at least 30 minutes of movement daily for 10 to 19 days will receive a LiveWell Colorado smartphone cling wipe; participants who have completed 20 to 29 days will receive a LiveWell Colorado water bottle; and anyone who completes all 30 days will receive a LiveWell Colorado hat. All participants who complete at least 10 days will receive a Chipotle Mexican Grill buy one, get one free entree coupon, and participants who complete at least five days will be entered into a grand prize drawing to occur after the challenge is over. Grand prizes include:

  • Two consecutive night stay at The Curtis Hotel in Denver
  • $100 Boulder Running Company gift certificate
  • Chipotle Mexican Grill catering for 20
  • 2 Fitbit® Flex Wireless Activity + Sleep Wristbands
  • 2 adidas® Brazuca FIFA 2014 World Cup Official Match Soccer Ball

“Regular exercise, just 30 minutes a day, can have a huge impact on an individual’s health,” said Donna Lynne, DrPH, president of Kaiser Permanente Colorado. “Kaiser Permanente is proud to once again be a part of this exciting statewide challenge, and we hope all Coloradans jump at the chance to get moving.”
