Southern Wine & Spirits of America Renews Support of Guild of Sommeliers

Southern Commits to Three-Year Sponsorship of Guild’s TopNewSomm National Competition Program

MIAMI--()--Mel Dick, Senior Vice President and President, Wine Division, Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc. (Southern) — the nation’s leading wine and spirits distributor with operations in 35 states — announced the renewed support of the Guild of Sommeliers, a non-profit group committed to wine education and service excellence. Over the next three years, Southern will sponsor the Guild of Sommeliers’ TopNewSomm annual competition, including the Southern Wine & Spirits TopNewSomm Trophy and associated educational scholarship.

Commenting on the sponsorship, Dick said, “At Southern, we believe in the importance of supporting wine and spirits education and service excellence in the industry. As a current board member for the Guild of Sommeliers, I understand the level of dedication and commitment to fundamental principles needed in the wine trade. We are honored to continue our support of the TopNewSomm competition, wine service professionals and the Guild.”

Geoff Kruth, Master Sommelier & Chief Operating Officer, Guild of Sommeliers, added, “Both Mel Dick and Southern Wine & Spirits of America have been instrumental in supporting the aims and programs of the Guild, and we are very thankful they have continued their sponsorship of the Southern Wine & Spirits TopNewSomm Trophy and scholarship for the next three years. The national competition identifies up-and-coming talent in the trade, while also providing recognition and scholarship for the next generation of sommeliers.”

The TopNewSomm annual competition for wine service professionals recognizes excellence and encourages the mastery of wine and spirits knowledge and is administered under the framework of the Guild of Sommeliers, judged by Master Sommeliers and governed by the standards of the U.S. Court of Master Sommeliers. The competition affords wine service professionals the opportunity to hone their skills and compete for the title of TopNewSomm.
