Iowa Gained Manufacturing Jobs for a Third Straight Year

EVANSTON, Ill.--()--Manufacturers’ News, Inc.-- Manufacturing employment in Iowa increased one percent in 2013, reports the 2014 Iowa Manufacturers Register®, a manufacturers database and directory published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI). According to data collected by MNI in 2013, Iowa added 2,114 jobs over the past year.

Manufacturers’ News reports Iowa is now home to 5,430 manufacturers employing 265,180 workers.

According to the database of manufacturers, gains were led by industrial machinery and equipment, which increased 1.5%. Industrial machinery and equipment stands as the state’s second largest sector with 48,276 jobs. Employment rose a half percent in food products, which remain the largest industrial sector, employing 57,263.

“Manufacturers in Iowa are making large strides across a variety of sectors,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “The state’s business-friendly environment, educated workforce, and abundant natural resources continue to attract new companies.”

Additional manufacturing sectors adding jobs in Iowa included paper products, up 5.9%; rubber/plastics, up 2.3%; and textiles/apparel, up 1.5%. Losses were reported in stone/clay/glass, down 7.5%; instruments/related products, down 5%; and chemicals, down 1.8%.

Manufacturing companies in Cedar Rapids employ 20,082 workers, with jobs unchanged in 2013. Jobs in Des Moines decreased 2.1% and rose 2.6% in Waterloo. Dubuque saw a 5% loss. Industrial employment increased 2.8% in Northwest Iowa and jumped 2.3% in the Northeast.
