BEDFORD, Nova Scotia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Nova Scotia College of Medical Laboratory Technologists is proud to be celebrating National Medical Laboratory Week from April 20th – 26th.
As the fourth largest health care profession, this group is responsible for generating lab results that contribute to medical decisions made, each and every day.
“With the recent media coverage of health care issues in Nova Scotia, we felt it was important to raise awareness to our profession” says Chris Hirtle, Chair of the Nova Scotia College of Medical Laboratory Technologists. “Our team of professionals are rarely seen by the public as we work in the laboratories, but we are key contributors to patient care. Without us, patient care stops”. Read more
National Medical Laboratory Week will be the kickoff to a six month awareness campaign where the intent will be to increase the public’s understanding of what Medical Laboratory Technologists do.
“Medical Laboratory Technologists are an integral part of the health care team” says Janice Jones, Executive Director/Registrar of the Nova Scotia College of Medical Laboratory Technologists. “The 2014/2015 budget released by Minister Diana Whalen is concerning. While we commend the Minister for increasing funds for healthcare, with a primary focus on physicians, key members of the healthcare team have been omitted, specifically Medical Laboratory Technologists. Most recently we have heard from our members that due to a shortage of hospital resources, some duties of Medical Laboratory Technologists are being performed by other health care workers that are not MLT’s. It is important for the public to understand what Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) do, the training involved to practice as an MLT and the importance of being licensed to ensure patient safety. Our public awareness campaign will aim at increasing our profile. We are excited to kick start the campaign with National Medical Laboratory Week”
