Seniors Can Stay Healthy and Fit With Free Programs Offered by SCAN Health Plan Arizona in May

PHOENIX--()--May is National Older Americans Month, a time to celebrate the specific health and wellness needs of seniors. During the month SCAN Health Plan Arizona will offer a wide variety of free classes ranging from meal planning to physical activity to diabetes self-management.

All events are open to SCAN members as well as the general public; however, space is limited, so pre-registration is required. Anyone interested in attending may call 855-901-7226, ext. 3420, to register.

Tempe (Maricopa County)

The following classes will take place at the SCAN Health Education Center at 1400 East Southern Avenue, Suite 735, in Tempe.

Celebrate National Senior Health & Fitness Day and the nation’s largest older adult health and fitness event by taking a fun class with Janet Jones, our own Senior Olympian. Then watch “Age of Champions,” the award-winning PBS documentary that follows five competitors who sprint, leap and swim for gold at the National Senior Olympics. Free balance screenings will also be offered. Get inspired and join the fun on Wednesday, May 28, from 9:30-11:30 AM.

For seniors, menu planning can take on a new significance, especially when planning food for small households. Find out how best to plan for nutritious, tasty and budget-friendly meals at the “Menu Planning” seminar on Wednesday, May 14, from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.

Learn which foods are the best to eat to support the special nutritional needs of seniors, specifically the foods that support bone and brain health, at SCAN’s “Foods for Older Adults” program on Wednesday, May 21, from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

The “Diabetes Self-Management Workshop” series continues on three Tuesdays this month: May 6, 13 and 20, from 9 – 11:30 a.m. The interactive workshop will offer participants a chance to learn goal setting, problem solving and action planning to gain the necessary skills to manage diabetes.

To help seniors avoid accidental falls that can cause serious injuries, SCAN is offering the continuation of the “Matter of Balance” workshop series, an eight-week program on Tuesdays, May 6, 13, 20, 27 and June 3 from 1 – 3:30 p.m.

Exercise classes offered by SCAN provide participants with an opportunity to increase their skill, balance and endurance in a supportive and social environment. Classes include:

  • Tai Chi & Qigong – A form of moving energy derived from Chinese martial arts. It consists of a series of slow, fluid movements done softly and gently using breathing techniques for healthy biorhythms. Held on Wednesday, May 7, 14 and 21 from 9 – 10 a.m.
  • Yoga for Every Body – A gentle yoga class specifically helpful for seniors with movement disorders. Participants will develop an overall sense of well-being, improved mobility and confidence. Held every Thursday in May from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.
  • Zumba Plus – A Latin-inspired dance and fitness class for those 50 plus. Held every Thursday in May from 10:45 – 11:45 a.m.

Tucson (Pima County)

To celebrate National Senior Health & Fitness Day in Tucson, SCAN is hosting “Active Everyday,” which explores physical activity guidelines for older adults and risks of inactivity. It will be held on Wednesday, May 28, at 10 a.m. at the Medicare Health Benefits Resource Center, located at 2716 South 6th Ave. in Tucson.
