DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Southline Transmission, L.L.C. is pleased to announce today that the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Western Area Power Administration (Western) have issued a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the proposed Southline Transmission Project (Project). The publication of the DEIS is a major milestone for the Project and provides an opportunity for the public to review the potential impacts of the proposed Project and to submit comments to BLM and Western.
"We are pleased to have achieved this milestone for the Southline Transmission Project, and we look forward to receiving public comments in response to the DEIS," said Hunter Hunt, President of Hunt Power, which is the parent company of Southline Transmission, L.L.C. "We are proud to put forward a project that will meet critical electric power needs for the region while respecting and preserving important local resources."
The Southline Transmission Project is a proposed 360-mile transmission line that would collect and deliver electricity across southern New Mexico and southern Arizona, relieving congestion, strengthening the existing electrical system and improving transmission access for local renewable and other energy sources.
The proposed project consists of two segments:
- One segment would be a new double-circuit 345-kilovolt (kV) transmission line that would link existing substations at Afton, south of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Apache, south of Willcox, Arizona; and
- The other segment would be an upgrade and rebuild of about 120 miles of existing transmission lines from 115-kV to double-circuit 230-kV in order to provide increased capacity to transmit electricity between Apache and the Saguaro Substation, northwest of Tucson, Arizona.
BLM and Western have scheduled public hearings in May to provide information and to receive comments on the DEIS. More information about the DEIS and the upcoming meetings can be found on the BLM Web site at http://www.blm.gov/nm/southline or on Western’s Web site at http://go.usa.gov/E8I.
