CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local #134 announced today that it has named Robert A. Mariano, Chairman and CEO of Roundy’s, Inc., the IBEW Local #134 Chicagoland Businessperson of the Year for 2014. Mariano is the namesake of Mariano’s, which opened its first store in the Chicagoland area in 2010 and has enjoyed wide commercial success.
IBEW Local #134 established the new annual award to honor business leaders who, through their consistent and continuous employment of union workers, have encouraged the quality of their products and services. It will be conferred on Mr. Mariano at Local #134’s regular business meeting on April 3, 2014 at IBEW headquarters on 600 W. Washington Street in Chicago.
According to IBEW Business Manager Terry Allen, “The award recognizes employers whose insistence on using skilled member electricians promotes safety in the workplace, job growth and stability in the marketplace, and dignity among IBEW members and their families.”
As the first ever recipient of the award, Mariano was selected because IBEW considers him to be a standard bearer for the honor that the union hopes to deliver to deserving businesspeople each year.
Mr. Mariano has been President and CEO of Roundy’s since 2002. He was previously CEO of Dominick’s Supermarkets, Inc. and has a career long history of success in the retail food industry dating to 1972 when he joined Dominick’s.
Currently, Mariano’s has 18 locations throughout Chicagoland, and it anticipates a total of 29 stores by the end of the year.
IBEW Local #134 was nationally chartered in 1900 and today retains its original mission: to improve electrical workers’ rights, benefits and security. The Union, which was among the first organized labor groups to develop electrician apprentice training programs, a tradition that also continues today, serves more than 13,500 members in the Chicagoland area.
