Gander Mountain to Give Away 50,000 Trigger Locks This Weekend

Leading Outdoor Retailer Amplifies Responsibility Pledge: ‘With Rights Comes Responsibility; Secure Your Firearms’

ST. PAUL, Minn.--()--Gander Mountain, the nation’s largest retail network of outdoor specialty stores for hunting, fishing, camping, marine and lifestyle apparel and footwear, announced today that it will give away 50,000 trigger locks as part of its firearms responsibility call to action: “With Rights Comes Responsibility; Secure Your Firearms.”

Gander Mountain will give away the trigger locks this weekend – April 4 through 6 – at its 133 stores in 25 states to customers who sign a pledge to secure their firearms. Gander Mountain launched the pledge initiative in April 2013 at GanderMountain.com, as well as the hashtag #responsibilitypledge throughout social media to spark discussion and encourage responsible firearms ownership.

“We are committed to continuing to raise awareness that responsible firearms ownership is a necessity, not an option. It’s everyone’s responsibility to safeguard against firearms getting into the hands of the underage, untrained and unauthorized,” said Steve Uline, executive vice president of marketing for Gander Mountain. “This weekend, we’re encouraging firearms owners and people who may have a family member or friend who owns a firearm to visit a Gander Mountain store, sign the pledge and pick up a free trigger lock. Locking 50,000 firearms and stimulating ongoing conversation about responsible ownership is our goal this weekend.”

Trigger locks are limited to one per customer, and the locks are usable on any firearm.

Gander Mountain launched its firearms responsibility call to action in April 2013, including sponsoring Michael Waltrip Racing’s No. 15 car driven by NASCAR star Clint Bowyer in the Sprint Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway. In addition to driving consumers to take the pledge at GanderMountain.com, the company continued raising awareness throughout the year via newspaper, radio and digital advertising, social media, point-of-sale and presence at the CMA Music Festival in Nashville and the Minnesota State Fair.

Gander Mountain’s commitment to responsible ownership also includes training thousands of firearms users annually via safety classes and private instruction. In stores, it is Gander Mountain policy that employees ask all customers who purchase a firearm if they are properly equipped to safeguard it.
