NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Pacific Life Insurance Company’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer James T. Morris recently announced ten assistant vice president promotions. The following promotions will be effective April 1, 2014, unless noted.
Christian Berke to assistant vice president, Database Management, Life Insurance Division
Mr. Berke joined Pacific Life in 2001 as technical program manager. He assumed roles of increasing responsibility, advancing to director of Database Management in 2007. In his current role, Mr. Berke is responsible for directing the design of complex database management frameworks and system integration solutions that support vital business systems, including the Commission system, New Business systems, and Planned Performance Tracking. As assistant vice president, Mr. Berke’s role will expand to include the technical environment support for Pacific Life’s Prime initiative. Mr. Berke lives in San Clemente and has a bachelor’s degree in business administration/information systems from San Diego State University.
Patrick Bortmann to assistant vice president, E-Commerce, Retirement Solutions Division
A resident of Riverside, Mr. Bortmann joined Pacific Life in 1999 as a web architect, with the responsibility of launching the first secure transactional website for financial professionals. Since then he has been promoted several times while providing leadership in the development of self-service internet applications. He has expanded his responsibilities to also include E-commerce (EDI), which includes the support and management of all electronic delivery interfaces with trading partners. Mr. Bortmann’s promotion to assistant vice president recognizes his greater scope of responsibilities in delivering complex technical solutions that help maintain the Retirement Solutions Division’s competitive advantage, as well as continuing to provide leadership and direction to the teams responsible for I-Net and EDI systems. Mr. Bortmann completed his post-doctoral studies at UCLA after receiving his Ph.D. in biophysics from the University of Strasbourg, France.
Michael K. Difley, CFA, to assistant vice president, Credit Analysis, Corporate Division
Mr. Difley joined Pacific Life in 2011 as director of Credit Analysis in Investment Management, with responsibility for analyzing new investment opportunities within the corporate bond market, as well as developing investment strategies for assigned industries and sectors. Mr. Difley’s promotion to assistant vice president recognizes the increased complexity and scope of investment opportunities for which he is responsible, as well as his contributions to the investment process as a whole. A resident of Laguna Niguel, Mr. Difley has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
Sarah Jarvis to assistant vice president, Compliance, Life Insurance Division
Ms. Jarvis joined Pacific Life in 2011 as a long-term care compliance consultant in the Life Insurance Division. In 2012, she was promoted to director of Market Conduct Compliance with responsibility to oversee the Life Insurance Division’s Market Conduct program. Her promotion to assistant vice president recognizes her expanded responsibilities supporting the Product Compliance team and additional advertising review responsibilities, including robust oversight of emerging opportunities such as social media. Ms. Jarvis is a resident of Huntington Beach and received a bachelor’s degree in finance from Florida State University and a Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration from the University of Miami.
Edmund Johnson to assistant vice president, Architecture, Life Insurance Division
Mr. Johnson, a resident of Mission Viejo, joined Pacific Life in 2000 as an internet architect in the Life Insurance Division. In 2011, he transitioned to the role of architecture consultant, responsible for supporting the technical enterprise architecture direction for the Life Insurance Division. His promotion to assistant vice president of Architecture recognizes his expanded responsibilities for planning and providing leadership in the development of strategic technical solutions. Mr. Johnson received a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of California, San Diego.
Geoff Kissel, CFP®, CSSC, to assistant vice president,
Institutional Sales, Retirement Solutions Division

Mr. Kissel joined Pacific Life in 2006 as a product manager for Structured Settlements in the Investment Management Division. In 2007, he was promoted to director of Annuity Products, and in 2010 he transitioned to the Retirement Solutions Division. He is responsible for field sales, internal sales and national accounts for the Structured Settlement line-of-business. Mr. Kissel’s promotion to assistant vice president recognizes his greater scope of responsibility in managing the Structured Settlements product. A resident of Irvine, Mr. Kissel received his bachelor’s degree in finance from Providence College.
Destiny Lara, FSA, to assistant vice president, ISP Product Development, Retirement Solutions Division
Ms. Lara, a resident of North Tustin, joined Pacific Life in 2011 as director and actuary within the Product Design department of the Retirement Solutions Division. In this role she directs the research, design, development, pricing and implementation of existing or new Institutional and Structured Products, and is a key contributor to the planning and successful execution of the division’s product design initiatives. Ms. Lara’s promotion to assistant vice president recognizes her greater scope of responsibility in creating and building appropriate risk adjusted products and processes. Ms. Lara received a bachelor’s degree in actuarial science from Ohio University.
Clive Plumb to assistant vice president, Digital Marketing, Retirement Solutions Division
Mr. Plumb joined Pacific Life in 1999 as an internet marketing manager in the Retirement Solutions Division. In 2001, he was promoted to director of Internet Marketing and has over the years assumed increasing responsibilities, including overseeing digital and social media efforts for the division. As assistant vice president, Mr. Plumb will have expanded responsibilities in leading the strategic advancements in digital marketing technology while also continuing to build a team of digital professionals.
Joseph Pum, CPA, to assistant vice president, Corporate Audit, Corporate Division
Mr. Pum, a resident Mission Viejo, joined Pacific Life in 1993 as an accounting supervisor in the Securities Operations area where he was responsible for accounting and reporting for fixed income and equity securities. In 1999, Mr. Pum transferred to Internal Audit before being promoted to director of Internal Audit in 2006. In his current role, he is responsible for a variety of operational audit matters, and for managing a growing team of professional audit staff, including the international audit team based in the U.K. As assistant vice president, Mr. Pum will assume the responsibility of leading key aspects of the evaluation and implementation of the recommendations from the external Quality Assurance Review assessment. Mr. Pum received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from San Diego State University.
Min Xu, FSA, to assistant vice president, Insurance Risk and Research, Corporate Division
Ms. Xu joined Pacific Life in 2011 as director for M Reinsurance in the Life Insurance Division, where she was responsible for managing all activities related to the reinsurance relationship with the M Financial Group. In 2013, she transferred to Enterprise Risk Management assuming the role in leading the research, measurement and reporting of insurance risk, including leadership of an enterprise project on future mortality outlook. Ms. Xu’s promotion to assistant vice president recognizes the impact of her leadership role in managing aggregate insurance risk. A resident of Laguna Niguel, Ms. Xu has a bachelor’s degree from Central University of Finance & Economics in Beijing and a master’s degree in actuarial science from Boston University.
