WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) installed Huw F. Thomas, B.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., as Chair-elect of the ADEA Board Directors on March 18. Members of the ADEA House of Delegates elected Dr. Thomas during their meeting at the 2014 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition in San Antonio, TX.
“As dental educators, we have a unique opportunity to help shape the future of our profession; we should be passionate and bold and embrace that opportunity,” says Dr. Thomas. “As such, I am deeply honored and most privileged to have been elected for the position of Chair-elect of the ADEA Board of Directors.”
Dr. Thomas is Dean of the School of Dental Medicine and Professor of Pediatric Dentistry at Tufts University. Dr. Thomas went to Tufts from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where he served for seven years as Dean of the School of Dentistry. Prior to joining UAB, Dr. Thomas held positions of increasing responsibility at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and the University of Connecticut Health Center.
As the new Chair-elect of the ADEA Board of Directors, Dr. Thomas replaces Lily T. Garcia, D.D.S., M.S., FACP, who was installed as the new Chair of the ADEA Board of Directors. “Huw Thomas has been a member of ADEA throughout his academic career,” says Dr. Garcia. “Through his service in various capacities, he has demonstrated his dedication to furthering the mission of the Association and to improving oral health care. He will be an asset to the dental education community in his new role as Chair-elect of the ADEA Board of Directors.” Up until his appointment as Chair-elect of the ADEA Board of Directors, Dr. Thomas served as a member of the Administrative Board of the Council of Deans and as ADEA Board Director for Deans.
Dr. Thomas earned his dental degree from the prestigious Guy’s Hospital, University of London, England, in 1975. In 1978, he received a Pediatric Dentistry Certificate from Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, NY, and a master’s degree in Dental Research from the University of Rochester. In 1986, he earned his doctorate in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington.
Dr. Thomas is also the author or co-author of more than 150 published articles, chapters and abstracts in numerous scientific journals and holds fellowships in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American College of Dentists and International College of Dentists. He is a member of several national and international associations and societies, including the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society.
After serving as Chair-elect of the ADEA Board of Directors for one year, Dr. Thomas will become Chair of the ADEA Board of Directors at the conclusion of the 2015 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition in Boston, MA, March 7-10, 2015.
