PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Seniors have an opportunity to stay healthy and fit by improving their nutrition knowledge and practicing a variety of ways to stay in shape by participating in free wellness classes and presentations offered by SCAN Health Plan Arizona.
All events are free and open to SCAN members as well as the general public; however, space is limited, so pre-registration is required. Anyone interested in attending may call 855-901-7226, ext. 3420, to register.
The following classes will take place at the SCAN Health Education Center at 1400 East Southern Avenue, Suite 735, in Tempe.

On Tuesday, April 8, from 9 – 10:30 a.m., seniors are invited to attend a “Heart Health Presentation and Doc Talk” during which they can learn about the seven most important steps to a healthier heart. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss heart-related questions and concerns with a doctor.
The “Diabetes Self-Management Workshop” is being offered on three Tuesdays this month: April 15, 22 and 29 from 9 – 11:30 a.m. This six-week workshop uses interaction, goal setting, problem solving and action planning to help participants gain the necessary skills to manage diabetes.
Because accidental falls can turn into serious injuries for seniors, the “Matter of Balance” workshop is a must for seniors who want to learn skills to avoid falls. The series begins on Tuesday, April 15, from 1 – 3:30 p.m. and continues each Tuesday at the same time for eight weeks.
Exercise classes offered by SCAN provide participants with an opportunity to increase their skill, balance and endurance in a supportive and social environment. Classes include:
- Tai Chi & Qigong – A form of moving energy derived from Chinese martial arts. It consists of a series of slow, fluid movements done softly and gently using breathing techniques for healthy biorhythms. Held every Wednesday from 9 – 10 a.m.
- Yoga for Every Body – A gentle yoga class specifically helpful for seniors with movement disorders. Participants will develop an overall sense of well-being, improved mobility and confidence. Held every Thursday from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.
- Zumba Plus – A Latin-inspired dance and fitness class for those 50 plus. Held every Thursday from 10:45 – 11:45 a.m.
A healthy cooking demonstration featuring foods that support “healthy habits” like physical activity will be held on April 16 from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
One of the hottest topics in nutrition is determining the best vitamins and minerals to supplement good health. On Wednesday, April 9, from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m., SCAN will offer “Vitamins and Supplements,” which will provide the best recommendations for seniors to both improve their health and help them to save money by avoiding unnecessary supplements.
Feng Shui, a Chinese philosophical system of harmonizing the human existence with the surrounding environment, will be explained during the “Feng Shui Workshop,” which is being offered on Wednesday, April 23, from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Participants will learn how to enhance their homes, prosperity, relationships and health by using the principles of this 3,000-year-old philosophy.
