PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--For children who’ve received a life-saving congenital heart surgery at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, American Heart Month holds a very special meaning for them and their families. That’s why they’re getting together this Sunday at the hospital’s 14th Annual Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Day Party, to bond with other families and give thanks to surgeons and staff at the Children’s Heart Center.
The event will be filled with fun times and shared stories by families and staffers alike, and is right on the tail-end of Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week on February 7-14. This special week highlights a global awareness effort to help educate the public about congenital heart defects, America’s and every country’s No. 1 birth defect.
About 500 children receive surgery each year to correct congenital cardiac defects at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford – a program annually ranked as one of the nation’s top 10. This party is not just a reunion for families with a common, heartfelt connection. It’s also a time to celebrate the innovative treatment and care that allowed these kids to live.
“The party is a celebration of life, a way to make people aware of congenital heart defects,” said Deb Hanisch, a pediatric nurse practitioner at the Children’s Heart Center and main organizer of the event. “I think that it’s wonderful that so many children born with heart defects are now thriving, thanks to advances in medicine.”
Dozens of families and kids of all ages will gather at Palo Alto’s Lucie Stern Community Center from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.to enjoy a jump house, face painting, arts and crafts, heart-themed treats and plenty of emotional reunions. Representatives of the Silicon Valley chapter of Mended Little Hearts, a support program for parents of children with heart defects and heart disease, will also be in attendance.
Join us for a few treats and to meet those for whom every day is a heart day.
