January 2014 DIVER Geo Scores Released

Proprietary Score Shines Spotlight on Economic Well-Being of U.S. States, Counties and Cities

STAMFORD, Conn.--()--The DIVER Geo Score results are in for January. DIVER Geo Score represents a relative score of the economic health of a state, county or city within the U.S. Based on a scale of 0-10, with 10 being the best, this data is updated monthly and is calculated from multiple economic and demographic factors related to three primary data categories—employment, income and housing.

Below are the latest results through January 31, 2014:

GEO SCORE: BY STATE

Highlights: The Top 10 Reshuffles but Its Members Stay the Same; Maryland and Massachusetts Drop Out of the Top 10 and are Replaced by Minnesota and South Dakota; Minnesota and California Continue as Most Improved

For January, Minnesota, a new Top 10 entrant last month, continues to show strong improvement in its Score driven by a sharp increase in Wages, a strong increase in Housing Prices and a decline in the Poverty Rate. Maryland, which had dropped from the Top 10 in December, continues its fall dropping to 20th overall with a sharp decline in the Labor Participation Rate and an increase in its Poverty Rate. California’s strong ascent continues with an increase in Wages and strong Housing Price data and a decline in the Unemployment Rate. Common themes amongst our top movers for January were declining Unemployment, increased Wages, a decline in Poverty and stronger Housing data.

Mississippi, Nevada and Georgia come in with the lowest Geo Scores while Maryland suffered the steepest decline in its score (-2.8). As with last month, States suffering the most significant declines in their Geo Scores saw a marked decline in their Labor Force Participation Rate with Mississippi and Tennessee’s rates declining by over 3%; increases in the Poverty Rate drove declines in seven of ten States.

Highlights: North Dakota Counties Dominate the Top 10; List of Most Improved Has a Healthy Mix and 9 of the 10 Biggest Decliners Hail from Maryland

Nine of the top ten Geo Score counties come from the Rough Rider State of North Dakota (Midland, Texas is the other). Counties with the most significant increases in their Geo Score spanning seven States experienced decreases in Unemployment and nine of ten saw increases in Wages and Housing Prices. Donley, Texas saw eye-popping increases in its Labor Force and Wages.

All of the Top 10 counties with the greatest decline experienced an increase in Foreclosures and half saw declines in Housing Prices. Poverty (increased) and Labor Force (declines) impacted six counties.

Highlights: California’s Top Dominance Continues with Texas Making a Strong Showing

This month’s Top 10 city Geo Scores find Midland and Odessa, Texas occupying the number one and two spots while California cities take six of the top ten. For the Top 10 Geo Score increases at the city level, all saw declines in their Unemployment Rate and increases in their Housing-related data. Wages also were up in nine of ten and Poverty down in eight of ten cities.

The bottom four cities saw no change from last month while Merced and Stockton, CA were added to the bottom ten. For cities with the steepest declines in Geo Scores, declining Labor Force Participation and an increase in Foreclosures plagued seven of ten while increased Poverty was prevalent in eight of the bottom ten.
