Healthways and MeYou Health Selected by Blue Shield of California to Provide Social Well-Being Solutions to Three Million Members

Three-Year Agreement Acknowledges the Critical Role of Social Connections in Sustaining Healthy Behaviors

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--()--Global well-being improvement leader Healthways (NASDAQ: HWAY) has signed a three-year agreement with Blue Shield of California to provide the company’s MeYou Health-branded social well-being improvement solutions to support Blue Shield’s Wellvolution health and wellness program. Healthways will also deliver telephonic health risk coaching to support the program.

Starting in January, Blue Shield of California’s three million commercial members and over a dozen employer groups, including Blue Shield of California employees, will have access to MeYou Health’s suite of “open social” well-being improvement products. Eligible participants can invite friends and family to join them free of charge in using the products, unlike typical employer-sponsored programs. The resulting rich social interactions combine with intelligent game design to drive long-term engagement and effectiveness, an innovative approach that complements and enhances more traditional strategies.

At the core of the MeYou Health offering is Well-Being Tracker™, a centralized point from which members can access well-being assessments, perform program eligibility checks and referrals, participate in well-being improvements programs that range from light to heavy touch, and view and redeem the incentives they have earned for participation in employer-sponsored programs. Well-Being Tracker also provides comprehensive reporting of well-being improvement activity across the platform, allowing Blue Shield of California to assess impact and refine initiatives with greater clarity.

Key engagement programs in the suite include:

  • Daily Challenge®, an evidence-based social well-being intervention integrating behavior change and social networking science with gaming principles to drive engagement and meaningful well-being improvement. Daily Challenge participants receive a daily email and/or a text message suggesting a small action they can usually complete in a few minutes, along with information about how to complete the challenge and its relation to well-being. Daily Challenge’s small-step approach covers well-being activities spanning healthy eating, physical activity, stress management, financial planning and healthy relationships. Study findings show that Daily Challenge measurably improves the well-being of participants, particularly those engaged socially with other Daily Challenge users, as recently published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine.
  • Walkadoo™, a wireless “pedometer-powered” daily physical activity program recently launched by MeYou Health. Rather than simply encouraging individuals to count their steps, the program suggests realistic step goals that adjust and evolve as the software learns more about an individual’s activity patterns. Walkadoo takes the traditional notion of graphing step data and transforms it into an engaging social experience that supports people to be more physically active. Walkadoo seamlessly integrates with the wireless tracking device FitLinxx Pebble®. Alternatively, Walkadoo participants may use one of a number of widely available wireless devices, such as Fitbit®.
  • Health Risk Coaching for members in need of more intensive lifestyle management. Proactive and reactive telephonic health risk coaching from Healthways will support Blue Shield of California in its transition to a next-generation coaching program that spans web, mobile, text messaging and interactive voice response (IVR) options.
  • Incentives platform capable of both accommodating the inherent complexity that an effective incentive program entails and scaling it for an organization the size of Blue Shield of California. The platform can efficiently handle the unique configurability requirements dictated by program design, customers, population segmentation, incentive periods, award categories, individual awards, award content, fulfillment scenarios, product integration, event tracking rules, award progress tracking, redemption limits, fulfillment process, redemption support, budgeting, billing, reporting and other requirements.
