Thompson Hine Repeats 100 Percent Ranking on 2014 HRC Corporate Equality Index

"Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality" Is Latest Recognition of Firm's Efforts to Advance Diversity

CLEVELAND--()--Thompson Hine LLP is pleased to announce that for a second year in a row it earned the top rating of 100 percent and recognition as a “Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality” on the Corporate Equality Index (CEI), an annual survey administered by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC). The CEI measures an employer’s commitment to policies, practices and protections pertinent to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees.

Each year, HRC invites the largest and most successful public and private companies in the United States to participate in the rating process. The CEI, which has become the gold standard for corporate policies and practices related to LGBT employees and their families, rates companies on 40 such policies and practices.

“Thompson Hine is committed to workplace equality,” said Deborah Z. Read, the firm’s managing partner. “We strive to create an inclusive culture that allows us to attract and retain great lawyers and staff, and, in turn, offer the best talent to our clients. The benefits of respecting the differences in our workforce are critical to our success. We welcome HRC’s recognition of our firm as a ‘Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality.’”

Robyn Minter Smyers, chair of Thompson Hine’s Diversity & Inclusion Initiative, added, “We remain passionate about diversity and committed to building and sustaining an inclusive work environment that is unrivaled. We believe our firm’s diversity enriches our service to clients, enabling us to provide greater creativity and innovation.”

The 2014 CEI rated a total of 934 employers, applying five principal criteria to arrive at the 100 percent rating: equal employment opportunity policy, employment benefits, organizational LGBT competency, public commitment and responsible citizenship. By ensuring equality in each of these criteria, Thompson Hine joined the ranks of those major U.S. businesses receiving the 100 percent rating for their treatment of LGBT employees and consumers.

Thompson Hine, through the efforts of its Diversity & Inclusion Initiative and its Women’s Initiative, Spotlight on Women®, is committed to attracting, retaining and supporting a diverse workforce. The strength of that commitment is most evident in the makeup of the firm’s leadership, with a woman serving as its managing partner and 50 percent of its Executive Committee comprised of women and minorities. Women and minorities also serve as practice group leaders and office partners-in-charge.

This award is the latest in a series of accolades Thompson Hine has received for its commitment to workplace diversity. Profiles in Diversity Journal recognized the firm with its 2013 Diversity Leader Award as well as an Award of Excellence in conjunction with its 2012 International Innovation in Diversity Awards. Thompson Hine was the first law firm honored with the Best-in-Class Award for Middle Market Senior Management Diversity from the Commission on Economic Inclusion, a program of the Greater Cleveland Partnership, for “building and maintaining a diverse and inclusive organization,” and the firm received two inaugural Diversity & Inclusion Innovation Awards from the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association.

In addition, Thompson Hine was selected as one of the 2013 Working Mother and Flex-Time Lawyers 50 Best Law Firms for Women and honored by the Euromoney Legal Media Group Americas Women in Business Law Awards as the best national firm for talent management for its Spotlight on Leaders program. The firm also was selected by The Women in Law Empowerment Forum as one of only 42 U.S. law firms to receive its Gold Standard Certification and named a Top 100 Law Firm for Women by Multicultural Law magazine.

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve LGBT equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against LGBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.
