Amerigroup Foundation Presents ‘Champion for Children’ Award to Louisiana Sen. David Heitmeier

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.--()--The Amerigroup Foundation presented Louisiana Sen. David Heitmeier with its “Champion for Children” award for his outstanding advocacy efforts on behalf of Louisiana families. As part of this recognition, the Foundation awarded $1,500 in Sen. Heitmeier’s honor to the Knights of Columbus.

“We are pleased to recognize Sen. Heitmeier as a true advocate and voice for children and families in Louisiana,” said George Bucher, Amerigroup Louisiana president. “Sen. Heitmeier shares our vision supporting programs which enhance the well-being of people in the communities we serve.”

Elected to the Louisiana Senate in 2008, Sen. Heitmeier has committed his professional life to health care as a practicing optometrist and advocate for programs providing free eye care to local communities in his district. As chair of the Health and Welfare Committee, Sen. Heitmeier is committed to expanding access to primary care and increasing the number of federally qualified health care centers in Louisiana.

“I am proud to advocate for positive health outcomes and quality health care for families in Louisiana and want to ensure the well-being of children and families remains a priority in our state,” said Sen. Heitmeier. “I am honored to be selected as the 2013 Amerigroup Louisiana ‘Champion for Children’ Award recipient.”

The $1,500 “Champion for Children” contribution to the Knights of Columbus will fund a toy drive organized and sponsored by Sen. Heitmeier. Ten children from local families facing financial hardships this holiday season will receive a toy voucher and a visit from Santa in a festive atmosphere at the “Sharing the Spirit of Christmas Celebration.” Sen. Heitmeier, the Knights of Columbus and local churches collaborated on this event.

The “Champion for Children” award is a part of a national program by the Amerigroup Foundation to recognize outstanding public advocacy efforts by government and community leaders to improve the health and well-being of children across the country.
