NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today at 8:48 a.m. EDT, long-distance swim legend Diana Nyad successfully completed her 48-hour "Swim for Relief" in New York City’s Herald Square to support Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts. The event kicks off a month-long drive by Nyad to raise funds for AmeriCares, a nonprofit global health and disaster relief organization that delivers medicines, medical supplies and aid to people in need around the world and across the United States.
Now through October 31, those in and outside of New York can support the Nyad Swim for Relief by directly donating funds, or starting their own fundraising efforts, at www.NyadSwimforRelief.com. P&G brands such as Duracell, Tide and Secret have underwritten all production costs for the Nyad Swim for Relief, maximizing the funds donated to directly support AmeriCares Sandy-related recovery activities.
"While it may look like a solitary sport, it takes a team to show the world we haven't forgotten the victims of Hurricane Sandy," said Diana Nyad. "I've completed this first step but we need your continued support to raise funds and help communities still hurting a year after the storm. If we can raise $100,000 over 48 hours, imagine what we can do together in the coming three weeks."
Hurricane Sandy caused approximately $70 billion in damage across the Eastern seaboard, destroying 12,500 homes in New Jersey alone. AmeriCares has more than 30 years of experience responding to major disasters across the globe, including Hurricane Katrina, the 2010 Haiti earthquake and the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami. In the months following Hurricane Sandy, AmeriCares distributed more than $6.4 million in aid to help survivors, including $3.5 million for medicines and relief supplies and $2.9 million in grants to community organizations providing services such as storm clean-up and mental health counseling.

Diana left swimming at the age of 30 with one regret—in 1978, after battling the odds in the open ocean for 41 hours and 49 minutes, Diana was forced to abandon her never-before swum challenge of reaching Florida from Cuba.
