PASADENA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Kaiser Permanente Southern California leads the nation in cervical cancer screening rates, ranking No. 1 out of nearly 500 commercial health plans, according to the recently released 2013 National Committee for Quality Assurance’s Quality Compass® data.
The Quality Compass data assesses the performance of national health plans on 43 important clinical and service standards. In addition to Kaiser Permanente Southern California’s No. 1 ranking, Kaiser Permanente commercial health plans in total were ranked No. 1 in 13 of the effectiveness of care measures, more than any other health plan. This is the fifth year in a row Kaiser Permanente has had the most No. 1 rankings.
“The Quality Compass data highlights the level of dedication from our doctors and care teams to provide the highest level of care,” said Edward M. Ellison, MD, executive medical director of the Southern California Permanente Medical group, representing nearly 7,000 Kaiser Permanente physicians who care for 3.6 million members in Southern California. “These outstanding scores are also a result of our commitment to prevention, and continuous quality improvement efforts, where all caregivers — physicians, nurses, managers, and frontline staff — apply best practices that help members reach their full health potential.”
Cancer-related effectiveness of care measures are particularly important to Kaiser Permanente, and the organization is proud that the Southern California region ranked highest for cervical cancer screening rates among the nation’s commercial plans. Additionally, earlier this year three Kaiser Permanente medical centers in California were recognized by U.S. News & World Report for being “high performing” in cancer care.
To further its commitment to fighting cancer, Kaiser Permanente recently launched kp.org/cancercare, available in both English and Spanish. The new website highlights the organization’s unique approach to overcoming cancer through earlier detection, excellent personalized care delivered with compassion, leading-edge research and technology, and lifestyle coaching.
This recognition by NCQA is just the latest in a string of accolades Kaiser Permanente has received recently. In mid-September, the NCQA ranked five Kaiser Permanente health plans — with a total membership of more than 8.2 million — as the five top Medicare plans in the country. Kaiser Permanente was also the only health plan in California to earn the highest possible rating — four stars — for overall quality of care and HMO satisfaction in the State of California Health Care Quality Report Card (2013 Edition).
