DIRECTV’s Carbon Disclosure Project Score Beats Industry Average for Second Consecutive Year

DIRECTV Achieves 10 percent Single-Year Reduction in Total U.S. Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions

EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--()--Demonstrating continued leadership in responding to climate change, DIRECTV achieved a 10 percent single-year reduction in total U.S. greenhouse gases (GHG) in 2012, enabling it to more than double its 2015 emissions reduction goal. This single-year reduction is the equivalent of more than 21,500 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Participating in the CDP for the second consecutive year, DIRECTV received a disclosure score of 91 out of 100 and a “B” performance score on its 2012 U.S. emissions performance, placing it significantly ahead of the average Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP*) score** for its industry group.

"From our offices, to our hardware, to our van fleet, DIRECTV remains steadfast in its efforts to operate every part of our business in the most socially and environmentally responsible way possible," said Mike Palkovic, executive vice president, Services and Operations, DIRECTV. "We are extremely proud of our recent CDP score and the results we were able to achieve in 2012. However, we know that there is always more work that can be done and we will continue to lead our industry in the development of innovative energy efficient solutions."

For the first time, DIRECTV’s 2012 emissions calculations also included a detailed calculation of the indirect emissions associated with the use of the company’s receivers by U.S. customers. The Company set an aggressive goal to accelerate the deployment of ENERGY STAR® qualified receivers, which helps minimize our Scope 3 emissions. More than 95 percent of the receivers that DIRECTV has deployed since 2009 have been ENERGY STAR qualified. DIRECTV is a longtime participant in the ENERGY STAR program and won the 2013 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award.

The emissions DIRECTV reported to the CDP were drawn from the company’s 2012 Statement of Greenhouse Emissions. This statement was reviewed by an independent third party, Deloitte and Touche; you can see their Independent Accountants’ Review Report and DIRECTV’s 2012 Statement of Greenhouse Gas Emission here.

*The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping companies measure, disclose, and manage their carbon footprint. By leveraging the markets and some of the world’s largest investors, governments, and shareholders, CDP creates serious incentives for companies to make their operations more sustainable.

** CDP has created a two-part scoring system. The “disclosure score”—rated between 1 and 100—relates to the depth to which companies respond to CDP’s questions. Companies that provide a detailed portrait of their emissions and sufficiently answer CDP’s questions receive higher scores. The “performance score” reflects the efforts that a company has taken that year to act on the information they found from the disclosure score.
