PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AZ Business Leaders, a leading publication of Arizona's business community, today recognized Dr. Bill Pepicello as a top Arizona education executive for his distinguished 20-year track record of leadership at University of Phoenix, the nation's largest private university. Dr. Pepicello recently informed the University's board of trustees of his intention to retire as president once a successor has been named.
"Arizona is home to some of the country's most important universities—both public and private—and Bill's leadership has helped nontraditional college students not only here in the Valley, but throughout the world," said Sandra Watson, President and CEO, Arizona Commerce Authority. "His focus on innovative technologies that improve access to career-relevant higher education programs is noteworthy. He is rightly being recognized for bringing more opportunities to Arizonans looking to enhance their workplace skills and compete in a global economy."
"I have witnessed tremendous change during my 40 years of working in higher education, but nothing compares to the dramatic increase in access, focus on improved learning outcomes and enhanced career prospects for working adult students over the past 20 years—thanks in large part to University of Phoenix and the employers and industry leaders with whom we work closely," said Dr. Pepicello.
Dr. Pepicello began his tenure at University of Phoenix in 1995, and has held a number of leadership roles with the university, including provost, vice provost for academic affairs and dean of the School of Advanced Studies, before becoming president. His distinguished career in advancing higher education also includes service as assistant professor at University of Delaware, department chair for the classics at Temple University, and regional dean for National University. Dr. Pepicello also served as president of the University of Sarasota, and assisted in transforming the institution into what is today known as Argosy University.
Dr. Pepicello earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in classics from Gannon University, as well as a Master of Arts degree and a Doctorate of Philosophy degree from Brown University. His unwavering commitment to the community includes serving as the chairman of the Banner Health Foundation’s board of directors. He is also a member of the board of directors of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, the United States Department of Education’s National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity, the Valley of the Sun United Way, and the Arizona Commission for Postsecondary Education.
