PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Pica8, Inc., the leader in open systems for software defined networking (SDN), today announced that Factual Inc., a leading location platform, has selected Pica8’s open switches to help power its real-time data stack. Factual’s data stack processes billions of inputs to create its Global Places database, which covers 65 million local businesses and points of interest in 50 countries and is used by thousands of developers including some of the largest web and mobile brands. Factual selected the hardware-agnostic Pica8 switches to leverage the white box economics needed to keep up with its exponential data growth while integrating seamlessly into its current architecture.
“When we needed to expand our Hadoop and cluster processing capabilities, Pica8 quickly provided the complete switching system, including the white box hardware and operating system that met our rapidly growing infrastructure needs,” said Philip Marcus, director of systems operations, Factual Inc. “In addition to the lowered CapEx, Pica8’s sales and support team have been a great asset when we chose to switch vendors.”
Pica8 switches incorporate PicOS™, an open network OS that runs standard-based Layer 2/Layer 3 protocols with industry-leading OpenFlow / Open vSwitch integration. PicOS is decoupled from the hardware, including the switching ASIC, CPU or memory. PicOS utilizes proven high-performance hardware with a maximum switching fabric capacity of 176 Gbps for 1 GbE and 1.28 Tbps for 10 GbE platforms.
“Exponential data growth, rapidly changing application needs and the desire to drive down costs represent the drivers for taking an open networking approach,” says Steve Garrison, vice president of marketing, Pica8. “With a foundation of Debian Linux and OpenFlow/Open vSwitch functionality, Pica8 provides a clear path to SDN when the customer is ready to deploy.”
