OMAHA, Neb.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Proxibid (www.proxibid.com), the world’s largest, most trusted online marketplace for buying and selling high-value and specialized assets, today announced that the highly controversial Cobb-Edwards 1909 Honus Wagner T206 card will cross the auction block in a timed, online-only auction on Proxibid. Online bidding is available now, and will close on Monday, October 7 at 7:00 pm Central. To bid in this auction or to view the Cobb-Edwards 1909 Honus Wagner T206 Baseball Card, please visit www.honuswagnerauction.com or www.proxibid.com/HonusWagner.
The card, purchased between 1983 and 1984 by Ohio entrepreneur John Cobb for $1,800, is a card that collectors won’t want to miss. This controversial card depicts the famed baseball player, Johannes Peter “Honus” Wagner, when he played for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The back of the card features a rare Piedmont (Factory 25) blue ink back. The back of the card served as an advertisement for the brand of cigarettes, Piedmont, which were produced at Factory 25 in Virginia.
This Honus Wagner T206 card has spent many years under speculation and has been the subject of many reports citing its authenticity, making it all the rarer. The card has undergone numerous tests proving its authenticity – from the printing method to the paper and thickness including fiber tests and print tests. After a range of examinations, in 2011 the card was given the grade “Authentic” by Martin Brouillard, a Senior Grader of Autographs and Cards Authentication. In 2013 the card was subject to an image scan at 1200 dpi to examine the sides of the card. Through this scan, completed with state-of-the art scanning equipment at Robin Imaging Services in Cincinnati, OH, it was determined that the card has not been sandwiched. Bob Connelly, an expert appraiser, appraised the card at $850,000 in 2005.
“This card holds a special meaning for me because it was such a rare find, and I can’t wait to share it with the world so that I can give another baseball enthusiast the opportunity to own something truly legendary,” said Ray Edwards. “I’m excited to partner with Proxibid so collectors around the world can have a chance to own such a rare piece of history.”
The card was created when the American Tobacco Company began designing and issuing baseball cards in 1909 for a T206 series that featured more than 500 major league baseball players. Wagner was featured in the series without his consent, and refused to allow production of the card to continue due to moral objections. As a result, only 57 copies of the T206 Honus Wagner baseball card are known to exist.
“Proxibid is very excited to feature this card in our Marketplace,” said Jason Nielsen, Senior Vice President of Operations. “By bringing this card to auction, Proxibid is able to help collectors gain access to this rare piece of baseball history. This card represents the Holy Grail for many collectors, and we are honored to share it with collectors throughout the globe.”
