DHL DONATES SERVICES TO HELP TRANSFORM THE LIVES OF CHILDREN IN THE CONGO
FOR THE THIRD YEAR IN A ROW, DHL GLOBAL FORWARDING SHIPPED SUPPLIES TO GEORGES MALAIKA FOUNDATION SCHOOL FOR GIRLS
The corrected release reads:
DHL Global Forwarding, the air and ocean freight specialist within Deutsche Post DHL, assisted the Georges Malaika Foundation by delivering four boxes consisting of girl’s uniforms, classroom and computers supplies, and sports equipment for their students free of charge. Thanks to a joint effort between DHL’s Global Forwarding New York station and both Johannesburg and Kinshasa/Katanga Congo stations, the shipment was delivered successfully August 19 to L’École Georges Malaika School near the city of Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo.
“GoTeach is one of Deutsche Post DHL’s pillars of corporate responsibility, and we leverage our core competencies in transportation and logistics to support the communities in which we work,” said Matt Macary, DHL Global Forwarding area district manager, New York Metro. “By partnering with the Georges Malaika Foundation, we are able to assist in the academic development of these young women as future leaders in their country.”
Georges Malaika Foundation donated the school supplies for the girls who attend the school.
The shipment was moved via air freight and arrived at Johannesburg (JNB) Airport in South Africa. As in previous years, the Global Forwarding office in Johannesburg, South Africa was responsible for freight recovery, clearance and delivery to Democratic Republic of Congo. The local Global Forwarding office arranged trucking to the school’s door in Congo.
“Due to the remote location of the school, logistics plays an important role in ensuring all of the critical components from pick up to the final delivery are managed to plan,” said Adriana Henriquez, chief financial officer of the Georges Malaika Foundation. “With the help of DHL, we were able to put the uniforms, equipment and supplies to use in time for when school opens in September.”
Georges Malaika Foundation is a foundation dedicated to the advancement of African communities by providing educational opportunities to young girls, ages 5 to 18, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The school, in the village of Kalebuka, provides a tuition-free holistic learning experience, including uniforms, shoes, school supplies and two healthy meals a day. During September 2012 they opened three additional classrooms with a total of 150 girls enrolled. Their last end-of-the-year report, completed July 2013, indicates that out of the 150 girls enrolled, 139 successfully completed the school year with passing grades, and 51 students received stellar grades above 90 percent.
Thirty new students were added for the school year beginning in September 2013. There are now a total of 180 girls enrolled.
