NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--On Thursday, September 19, 2013, LexisNexis® Legal & Professional — a Reed Elsevier business and a leading global provider of content and technology solutions — and the Atlantic Council — a leading, nonpartisan international affairs think tank — will launch their joint initiative, the Global Rule of Law Business Principles, at “The Rule of Law Now: Building Business Leadership,” an invitation-only event in NYC. The event will also feature the inaugural LexisNexis Rule of Law Awards, to be presented to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the Honorable Mary Robinson, former president of Ireland and UN commissioner for human rights, and Laurel Bellows, president of the American Bar Association and principal of the Bellows Law Group, P.C.
Moderated by CNN White House Correspondent Jessica Yellin, the event will address the most pressing rule of law issues that impact global business, law firms, NGOs, and other institutions.
“Advancing the rule of law is an imperative requirement in serving the greater good—but it also protects and supports the goals of global business,” said Mike Walsh, CEO, LexisNexis Legal & Professional. “Research and common sense dictates that where the rule of law thrives there is greater economic growth and prosperity and improved social good. It is for these reasons that we partnered with the Atlantic Council and collaborated with legal professionals, C-level executives of cross-sector businesses, policy makers, academics, NGOs, and other stakeholders to craft the Global Rule of Law Business Principles. We are very excited to introduce the Principles at our September event with the Secretary-General.”
Said Frederick Kempe, president and CEO of the Atlantic Council, “The rule of law is a cornerstone of the Atlantic community’s efforts to further security and prosperity around the world. We hope these principles will provide a unique platform for companies to pursue higher standards in their international endeavors and to push governments toward advancing fundamental principles of rule of law.”
Top Worldwide Law Firms Agree on the Importance of the Rule of Law
As part of LexisNexis’ “Rule of Law Now” campaign, ALM Legal Intelligence conducted a survey of managing partners of the world’s top 100 law firms and general counsels of Fortune 1000 companies to determine the importance of the rule of law to the worldwide business community. [The complete survey findings are available upon request].
Concerns relating to the business world application of the rule of law that were voiced in the survey include: official and endemic corruption; regulatory compliance; consistency and predictability; greater respect for principles of contract and intellectual property; justified confidence in the enforceability of binding obligations; and lack of legal transparency, effective enforcement mechanisms, and reliable mechanisms of commercial arbitration. When asked if they felt there might be value in working together with other firms, businesses, institutions, and organizations to establish universal principles for working within the boundaries of the rule of law, a majority of those surveyed said they would formally endorse such a set of principles.
Only credentialed and accredited media will be permitted to cover the invitation-only event on September 19, 2013. For more information and/or to apply for press accreditation, please send your full name, title, and media organization to the communications contacts listed below by Thursday, September 12, 2013.
