Blekko Reimagines Search for iOS and Android, Launches izik for Smartphones

Categorical Search Results from Blekko Now Available on Smartphones, Tablets and Web

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif.--()--Search technology innovator Blekko today announced the launch of izik for smartphones, bringing their popular categorical search experience to iOS and Android users. izik capitalizes on the form and image rich functionality of today’s touch-screen devices, delivering search results in a highly-visual format, organized by category and easy to navigate with the flip of a finger.

izik for smartphones includes the same great touch-based features as the popular izik tablet app, redesigned for the smaller real estate common on most mobile phone screens. The smartphone app also includes a new feature called “What’s Nearby” that helps you find popular local establishments close to you such as cafes, movie theaters, bars, restaurants, and more. This feature is available only on izik for smartphones, reflecting how smartphones are used as a tool while on the go more frequently than tablets, which tend to be used mostly in a home or office.

izik leverages Blekko’s unique Dynamic Inference Graph, the most sophisticated categorization engine ever built, to deliver a dynamically created set of categories for every query. The Dynamic Inference Graph is an enormous semantic database that algorithmically maps queries into thousands of categories. For example, a search for “Michelle Obama” offers users the ability to directly access a quick answer as well as results from politics, fashion and news, while a search for “US Open” offers tennis, gold, scores and leaderboards, history as well as vivid images. Users can swipe their way through results in any one category, scroll to see results from other categories, pinch to zoom and easily share results through their social networks directly from the app.

Since its launch in January, izik has been a big hit with tablet users, boasting nearly 200,000 installs with 70% of users returning and spending an average of 12 minutes in the app each time it’s launched. This announcement also comes on the heels of Blekko unveiling a major redesign of its flagship search engine to include the visual, categorical search results that are a hallmark of the izik experience in the results for Blekko’s 5 million daily queries from its 12.5 million users.
