Siemens Supplies Drives for Australia’s Largest Resource Project

ATLANTA--()--Siemens was selected by Sinclair Knight Merz Pty. Ltd, a global engineering firm, to support the expansion of leading international mining group, Rio Tinto, for its iron ore port facilities at Cape Lambert, in the Pilbara region of North Western Australia. The Cape Lambert Port B project is one of the largest resource projects undertaken in Australia in recent years. The project will expand the port’s iron ore export capacity by an additional 123 million tons annually.

Siemens will provide a total of 18 GenIV Robicon Perfect Harmony drives, manufactured in New Kensington, Pa.; 18 H-Compact, 1400 kW, 6.6V, 6 pole motors from Siemens Electrical Drives Ltd, Tianjin, China; and eight Simotion control systems engineered in Australia for these two phases. These drive systems will be used on eight conveyors (inloading, outloading and wharf conveyors), that will transport iron ore from the stockyard to the shiploaders at the port.

The project is executed in two phases. Site commissioning of three conveyors of the first phase is slated for completion in August this year. Deliveries for the five conveyors of the second phase are already in progress. The commissioning is planned for 2014.

“This project required an experienced and reliable partner who could provide Rio Tinto with a state-of-the-art integrated drive system that could be easily interfaced to the plant; a drive system that could be configured and established with local engineering, testing and commissioning expertise, and supported by dependable customer service and support,” explains Rio Tinto project manager, Stuart Kennedy.
