REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Search technology innovator Blekko today introduced an innovative new way to display search results. This new design leverages the API built earlier in the year for mobile app izik and breaks search results down into categories that offer links to curated results from verified sources of content from around the Web. While the new categories offer users more results on a single page than ever before, Blekko search results will remain totally free of spam.
Over the past several months, Blekko has evolved their curated list of slashtags into categories in order to better serve a user base that has grown to about 12.5 million, with more than 5 million searches a day. The new Blekko site now features a responsive design, colorful visual cues, and a more image-rich layout.
“It’s a great testament to our team that we’ve reached a usage level that almost no other search startup has managed to achieve in the past decade,” said Rich Skrenta, CEO of Blekko. “And now we’re ready to take things to the next level by radically redefining the search results page. Now every search is going to instantly return results from the best sources on the Web and break them down into categories to provide a richer, more accurate list of real information, not just links.”
When users search on Blekko, they’ll see results broken down into categories of curated content. They’ll then be able to quickly click on the category that best matches their interest and see an expanded list of links to the best content sources for their specific search. For example, a search for Tesla will break results down into categories like Cars, Technology, History and Science, understanding that the search may be from someone planning to buy a car or researching a history paper on Nikola Tesla. The categories allow Blekko to better disambiguate search intent so users can quickly scan the page and drill down into a topical area without loading a new page.
Currently, search engine algorithms literally guess at the users’ interest or intention in a search term. Then they present results based on a complicated formula of links and traffic to pages, rather than the quality of the content. This gives an advantage to content creators who know how to game the algorithms.
“We found a way to take the guesswork out of search and instead empower users to quickly get to the best content for a particular query,” said Skrenta. “Blekko search results now allow users to more quickly get to great sources of information rather than scan through a list of blue links.”
Since inception, Blekko has been engaged in a massive mission to scrub the Web in order to feature the best content in every search. The company created a breakthrough proprietary search engine using their Dynamic Inference Graph, an enormous semantic database that algorithmically maps queries to thousands of categories. The result has been unprecedented growth and usage for a search startup.
