Macy’s Salutes “American Icons” This Summer

Beginning in May, the retailer will pay tribute to the spirit of the U.S.A. through specially-curated merchandise, themed events, cherished pastimes and a cause initiative to support America's veterans

NEW YORK--()--Macy’s (NYSE:M) today announced American Icons, a cross-country tribute to the beloved traditions, people and landscapes of America. From baseball and drive-in movies to legendary designers and destinations, America’s department store is honoring the popular brands, all-star events, cherished pastimes and meaningful causes that have contributed to our culture. An early summer celebration of the people, places and things that inspire our dreams, fuel our passions and make us proud to live in the land of the free, Macy’s American Icons will officially kick-off in mid-May and extend through July.

“Macy’s is America’s Department Store and through this campaign we’re celebrating the unique people, places and things that make our country great,” said Martine Reardon, Macy’s chief marketing officer. “In addition to collections from incredible brands including Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Michael Kors, we’re embarking on a nationwide tribute that will feature some of America’s most beloved and nostalgic pastimes including the drive-in, baseball and grilling, along with a program to support and celebrate America’s veterans.”

Macy’s has worked with some of America’s most popular brands to curate American Icons merchandise that brings together exclusive fashion and accessories and distinctive home product, including special collections from some of America’s most beloved brands and designers, including Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, MICHAEL Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger, Levi and Nike to represent some of the things that evoke American style and design from coast-to-coast.

Give Back. Get Back. – Got Your 6

One of the nation’s newest veteran support initiatives, Got Your 6 launched in 2012 with the aim to change the conversation around America’s millions of military veterans. In the military, "got your six" is a term that means "I've got your back." Uniting the resources of the entertainment industry with a coalition of more than 30 veteran-focused, nonprofit partners, the collaboration is dedicated to improving veteran reintegration, celebrating veterans as leaders and civic assets, and putting their skills to work at home. Got Your 6 focuses on six pillars of reintegration—jobs, education, health, housing, family and leadership.

To support Got Your 6 and their nonprofit partners, Macy’s is introducing a special savings pass with the goal of raising $3 million to benefit the effort. Beginning May 12, customers can give $3 at any register and get a 20/15 percent savings pass for a day they choose or wear their support by purchasing a Got Your 6 pin for $6* and also receive the discount. One hundred percent of the purchase price will be donated to Got Your 6 and its non-profit partners to empower returning veterans and military families, up to $3 million. Macy’s will also celebrate America’s greatest pastimes with a variety of unique events and programs planned throughout the campaign.

“Macy’s Great American Drive-In”

The year 2013 marks the 80th anniversary of the drive-in theatre, and Macy’s will pay homage to this time-honored family tradition with the retailer’s own version of “Macy’s Great American Drive-In.” Beginning in late June, customers can share the movie experience they remember from childhood through projections on the store exterior at 20 Macy’s locations and on-screen at 10 local drive-ins nationwide, featuring a classic movie screening, concessions and activities for the whole family.

“Macy’s Great American Road Trip”

A famous American rite of passage, Macy’s will take customers on “Macy’s Great American Road Trip” this summer with 2012 Macy’s iHeartRadio Rising Star winners Megan and Liz. The breakout pop music duo have earned rave reviews from “The New York Times,” “USA Today” and MTV, and were included in Billboard’s “21 Under 21” Hottest Acts list in 2012. Megan and Liz will take a cross-country road trip in an ultimate American icon, the new Ford Mustang convertible, to explore the vast musical history of America, all the while finding their own creative inspiration and discovering friends and surprises along the way. Beginning May 14, fans can follow Megan and Liz’s journey online at macys.com/icons, as they work on the definitive road trip song and ultimately arrive at their last destination, Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks in New York City.

Martha Stewart Collection Sweepstakes

Macy's and Martha Stewart Collection are cooking up a sweepstakes to highlight customers' favorite regional dishes from coast-to-coast and will give one lucky winner an exclusive experience with Macy’s very own American icon – Martha Stewart. To kick-off the sweepstakes, Martha and Everyday Food Editor-in-Chief Sarah Carey will be on hand at Macy's Herald Square in New York City on May 17 to discuss and demonstrate recipes from Martha's American Food, a book featuring Martha’s favorite national dishes, as well as the stories and traditions behind them.

“Macy’s Day at the Ballpark”

This Father’s Day, Macy’s is celebrating America’s favorite pastime with “Macy’s Day at the Ballpark.” Shoppers will feel as if they hit a home run with select in-store ticket giveaways and special activations at the baseball field. Between June 3 - 16, fans will experience Macy’s through scoreboard features, live announcements and game day giveaways at 10 Major League and 35 Minor League Baseball games.

“Macy's Great American Grilling Guru”

In celebration of for the summer sport of backyard grilling, Macy's is searching for America's ultimate gurus of the grill. Those who think they have the chops can submit their prized recipes on Macy's Facebook page (facebook.com/macys) from April 9 through April 27, and six finalists will compete in a Sizzle Showdown on June 8 in Atlanta, judged by chefs from Macy’s Culinary Council. One winner will earn the coveted title of America's Greatest Grill Guru and receive the grand prize: $10,000 and a trip to Macy's 4th of July Fireworks.
