Sign a result of new ADA law saying pools must have mechanical chair lifts

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SwimmingPoolSigns.com has launched a new sign to raise awareness about the newly-mandated accessible pool lifts that allow hotel guests with disabilities to easily enter and exit the pool. The sign, which alerts guests to the availability of a portable pool lift, goes hand in hand with the new American Disabilities Association (ADA) requirement (in effect as of January 31^st, 2013), mandating that hotels, motels, spas, and health clubs must equip swimming pool areas with mechanical lifts.

LaWanda Cook, Ph.D., a Training Specialist at the Employment and Disability Institute for Cornell University’s Industrial and Labor Relations, says, “The 2010 Standards for Accessible Design requires that recreational facilities, both public (Title II) and private (Title III) be made accessible to individuals with disabilities as of March 15, 2012. For many recreation sites, including hotels, access to pools and spas means providing a pool lift that enables individuals with mobility impairments to be lowered into the water and back out, with little or no assistance.” She explains, “For individuals with significant limitations, the option to stay seated on the lift while in the pool or spa can be a safe, more comfortable way to use these spaces. People with disabilities pay the same room rates as other guests. For those who require a lift in order to take advantage of these amenities, the presence of a lift means an equal opportunity to enjoy these leisure features of the hotel.”

The sign features a graphic of a portable lift chair for persons with disabilities in blue and white ink to complement swimming pool colors. The text informs guests that pool/spa lifts are available upon request, featured on durable aluminum that withstands abrasion.
