WILLIAMSBURG, Va.--()--Two extraordinary exhibitions are now open at the Muscarelle Museum of Art at the College of William & Mary.

Michelangelo: Sacred and Profane, Masterpiece Drawings from the Casa Buonarroti is a landmark exhibition that features several Michelangelo works never before seen in the United States. This rich and varied selection of 25 drawings is on loan from the master’s collection, preserved by his descendants in the Casa Buonarroti in Florence. The drawings include studies for paintings, as well as designs and plans for churches and military fortifications.

Two showcase pieces included in Michelangelo: Sacred and Profane are his drawings entitled "Madonna and Child" and "Cleopatra." The imaginary portrait of Cleopatra is considered one of the Renaissance genius’ most poetic conceptions, which he made as a gift for his friend, Tommaso Cavalieri.

Michelangelo: Sacred and Profane was curated by John T. Spike, a Michelangelo scholar and the Muscarelle’s assistant director. It is a two-city tour, traveling next to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where it opens on April 21 and closes on June 30, 2013.

A parallel exhibit at the Muscarelle is presented in honor of Mattie Preti on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the artist’s birth. Entitled A Brush with Passion: Mattia Preti (1613-1699), it features 15 of Preti’s most exquisite paintings, and is the first monographic exhibition of the artist’s works in North America. Preti was one of the principal Italian painters of the seventeenth century. The exhibition will feature loans from North American art museums including the National Gallery of Art, J. Paul Getty Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Los Angeles County Museum, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Toledo Museum of Art, and private collectors, including a major European collection.

Both exhibitions are on view now through April 14, 2013. The Muscarelle Museum of Art is located at 603 Jamestown Road on the campus of The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. The Museum is open from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and noon until 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. The Museum is closed on Mondays. There is an admission fee of $15.00.
