WoodWorks Announces National Wood Design Award Winners

Projects showcase exceptional wood building design

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--WoodWorks, an initiative of the Wood Products Council, has announced the winners of its 2013 national Wood Design Awards. Awards were presented at the San Francisco Bay Area Wood Solutions Fair on January 29, 2013. Submissions were made in the following categories: commercial wood design; wood design engineering; green building with wood; institutional wood design; interior beauty of wood; multi-story wood design; wood school design; and traditional wood design.

“We received more than 90 submissions from across the U.S.,” said Adrian Blocker, president and CEO of WoodWorks. "They were evaluated by a jury of architects, who had to make some very tough decisions — and they did a great job. The winners truly exemplify wood's versatility and the variety of ways wood products can be used to create outstanding architecture.”

The following winners were recognized in these categories:

Commercial Wood Design: LeMay – America's Car Museum in Tacoma, Wash.

  • Architect – LARGE Architecture, Los Angeles, Calif.
  • Engineer – Magnusson Klemencic Associates, Seattle, Wash.
  • Roof Design Engineer – Western Wood Structures, Inc., Tualatin, Ore.

Wood Design Engineering: Wawona Sculpture at the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle, Wash.

  • Artist – John Grade, Seattle Wash.
  • Engineer – Arup, Seattle, Wash.

Green Building with Wood: The David and Lucile Packard Foundation Company Headquarters in Los Altos, Calif.

Institutional Wood Design: Central Oregon Community College Science Center in Bend, Ore.

Multi-Story Wood Design: University of Washington West Campus Student Housing – Phase 1 in Seattle, Wash.

Wood School Design: Duke School in Durham, N.C.

  • Architect – DTW Architects & Planners Ltd., Durham, N.C.

Traditional Wood Design: Rio Roca Chapel in Palo Pinto County, Texas

  • Architect – Maurice Jennings + Walter Jennings Architects, PLLC, Fayetteville, Ark.
  • Engineer – Myers-Beatty Engineering, PLLC, Van Buren, Ark.

The awards recognize excellence in wood design, engineering, and construction, as well as innovative projects that showcase wood’s strength, beauty, versatility and cost effectiveness.
