FORTUNE Ranks USAA Among Best Employers in Norfolk

Magazine names USAA to top 50 for fourth straight year

SAN ANTONIO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--USAA is one of the highest-ranked employers in Norfolk, Va., on the newly published FORTUNE “100 Best Companies to Work For,”® an annual listing of top employers across the U.S.

“one of the richest benefit programs around”

Nationally, among large companies, USAA ranked No. 8. Among all companies, USAA ranked No. 40, and kept its spot in the top 50 employers in the country for the fourth straight year.

USAA has had operations in the Norfolk area since 1990 and currently employs approximately 360 people in its Norfolk office.

The list, released yesterday, is based on evaluation of results of independent employee surveys and detailed audits of company policies, practices, programs and overall culture.

In its profile of USAA, FORTUNE lauded USAA as having “one of the richest benefit programs around,” citing a variety of financial benefits, such as annual bonuses and 100% matching of 401(k) contributions up to 8%. The profile also highlighted the many amenities available to employees at the financial provider’s home office campus in San Antonio.

“Our employees don’t just come to work every day to do a job,” explained USAA CEO Joe Robles, Maj. Gen., USA (Ret.). “They’re on a noble mission – to give their very best to military families who have served or are serving our country. What makes USAA one of the nation’s best places to work are the people we serve and the employees who are focused on helping to facilitate their financial security.”

FORTUNE partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to produce the 100 Best Companies to Work For® list. Two-thirds of a company's score is based on the results of the Institute's Trust Index survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees from each company. The survey asks questions related to employees’ attitudes about management's credibility, their own job satisfaction and camaraderie in the workplace. The other third of the scoring is based on the company's responses to the Institute's Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring, communication and culture.

USAA continues to enjoy similar success in other “best of” lists, including:

  • Three straight years ranked No. 1 on Computerworld magazine’s 2012 “Best Places to Work in IT.”
  • No. 1 on the current G.I. Jobs magazine’s list of military-friendly employers.
  • No. 1 on the current Military Spouse magazine’s list of military spouse-friendly employers.
  • Top 25 on the current LATINA Style 50 list of the best employers for Latinas.

USAA employs more than 24,000 people and has a variety of career opportunities in Norfolk and locations around the country. Last year, more than 25 percent of new hires joined USAA with military experience or as a military spouse. Opportunities are listed at USAA’s online Career Center.
