Toshiba’s Versatile Hybrid Lab Enhances Cardiac Care at St. Bernardine Medical Center

Infinix-i and Hybrid Table Facilitate Interventional and Surgical Procedures in One Setting

TUSTIN, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In October, St. Bernardine Medical Center in San Bernardino, Calif., opened the first hybrid cath lab in Southern California’s Inland Empire equipped with Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc.’s Infinix™ VC-i cardiovascular X-ray system and hybrid table. The flexibility of the Infinix-i system combined with the tilting and cradling features of the table produce an ideal hybrid setting for both surgical and interventional procedures.

“The Infinix-i’s design and C-arm allow for greater access to the patient and let us work easily from either side of the table”

“Heart disease is the number one killer in our community and the new Toshiba hybrid lab provides our patients with the most advanced cardiovascular care available,” said Ed Langdon, senior executive director, Inland Empire Heart & Vascular Institute (IEH&VI). St. Bernardine’s IEH&VI is the region’s largest heart care provider and has received national recognition for the quality of care delivered to its patients.

According to Langdon, St. Bernardine’s IEH&VI utilizes the Infinix-i system and hybrid table for various applications such as AAA stents, transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVR) and vascular bypasses. Infinix-i also enables the hospital to conduct approximately 30 percent of its interventions using the radial approach, a safer and more efficient access point.

“The Infinix-i’s design and C-arm allow for greater access to the patient and let us work easily from either side of the table,” said Dr. Ashis Mukherjee, medical director of St. Bernardine’s IEH&VI. “As our workhorse system, the comprehensive dose reduction technologies also make exams safer for our clinicians and patients.”

“The Infinix-i's Access Halo, which provides 180-degree unobstructed patient head-end access with an integrated hybrid table, enables physicians to diagnose and treat patients more safely, accurately and efficiently,” said Stephen Bumb, director, X-ray Vascular Business Unit, Toshiba.

St. Bernardine’s IEH&VI provides the full spectrum of cardiac services and procedures. Last year, the hospital’s team of notable heart care professionals performed more than 700 open heart surgeries and a combined total of more than 8,600 diagnostic and interventional procedures in the cardiac cath labs, as well as nearly 3,400 echocardiograms. “More recently, St. Bernardine was rated a five-star recipient for coronary bypass surgery and one of America’s 100 Best Specialty Care hospitals for cardiac surgery by Healthgrades® as well as #1 in California for major cardiac surgery and #2 in the state for coronary bypass surgery by The Delta Group,” concluded Langdon.
