THE WOODLANDS, Texas--()--Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP today announced a donation of 12,000 pounds of polyethylene resin to the Detroit Section of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) to make toys for more than 30,000 needy children in the state of Michigan.

The resin was used to create toy cars, known as Plastivans, in honor of the National Plastic Center’s mobile teaching vehicle that visits schools throughout the country to teach students and teachers about chemistry and plastics.

The vehicles, available in purple and blue, will be distributed through the Michigan Association of United Ways and the Lions Club of Washington, Mich.

“We are so grateful for the generosity of companies like Chevron Phillips Chemical and others that make these vehicles possible,” said Scott Dzurka, president and CEO of the Michigan Association of United Ways. “Because of their donation we’ll be able to provide toys to children who might not otherwise receive much during the holiday season. It’s a privilege to be on the receiving end of such a large donation.”

The contribution is part of a program hosted each year by the Detroit Section of SPE, which provides an opportunity for its members to sponsor the materials, time and production of toys to help underprivileged children. Since the beginning of the program in 2000, SPE members have helped donate nearly 400,000 vehicles to boys and girls throughout Michigan.

The polyethylene resin used to build the 2012 vehicles was manufactured at Chevron Phillips Chemical’s Cedar Bayou plant in Baytown, Texas.
