MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The first three in a series of Bully in a Box® iBooks were introduced today, giving children and the adults in their lives an impactful new resource for dealing with bullying. The iBooks are geared toward kids ages 6 to 9, their parents and educators, and aim to open up conversation and reflection about the topic for this younger, impressionable age group.
The three iBooks released are called “Stinky Stevie,” “Peter Pummeler,” and “Katerina Faterina.” Each uses a collaborative approach where a basic story about the lead character is told, but the ending and solution is up to the reader. Prompted by thoughtful questions around the characters, their feelings and motivations, readers are enabled to discuss the situation, how it should be handled, as well as why it might be happening.
Says co-author Michelle Tunno, “Bullying is a national epidemic, but very few resources are available for children between the ages of 6-10 and the adults in their lives. I realized this when my own kids asked me about bullying. I thought I was prepared, but found myself fumbling around the topic and tried to give them the best answer I could. I knew I could have done better and knew I needed to prepare for the next conversation. Thus, Bully in a Box® was born.”
Tunno and her team of educators, psychologists and parents partnered with Minneapolis-based TREAT AND COMPANY to create a series of hand-illustrated, modern-designed iBooks that—in addition to addressing bullying—encourage and facilitate thoughtful conversations. The iBook interactions are engaging and entertaining, with animation and sound effects that come to life with a touch. Three characters tell their very personal, very relatable stories, allowing readers to choose between read-to-myself or read-to-me settings.
As a whole, the series offers a toolkit for parents and teachers to start the conversations that end bullying. “The goal is to not only provide a resource, but also to empower kids and adults with information they can confidently use in their lives,” adds Tunno.
Each Bully in a Box® iBook can be downloaded for $1.99. A portion of the proceeds will go to whatdoyouchoose.org, which supports anti-bullying campaigns.
