Research and Markets: Polypropylene Market in the US

DUBLIN--()--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/cxdc7d/polypropylene) has announced the addition of the "Polypropylene Market in the US" report to their offering.

Polypropylene or PP is also known as polypropene. It is a thermoplastic polymer used in a wide variety of applications including packaging, textiles, medical, etc. A major virtue of polypropylene is its ability to be used in a wide range of fibrous forms. Recently, its price has been on the rise and buyers are looking for substitutions. However, polypropylene is still essential to manufacturers and is likely to stay strong for a while. As a result, the polypropylene (PP) market has been under a lot of pressure lately from scarce propylene feedstock and slack demand; the beleaguered polymer may be down, but it is certainly not out.

The demand for polypropene accounted for nearly $25 billion in 2010. Demand for it is highly influenced by the type of resins used in recurrent markets such as for construction and motor vehicles. Injection molding is the largest end use for PP in the United States, followed by PP fibers as well as films or sheets. Till date, nearly 70% of the US market is based on homopolymer.

PP prices are likely to be influenced by PGP costs and with PGP monomer moving back up into the mid 70 cents per pound, it is anticipated to run only a couple cents higher in the future. Also, as ethylene production shifts to gas-rich regions worldwide, less propylene by-product is being produced, as compared to oil-based naphtha ethylene production.

One driving force for the polypropylene market in the US is the significant pickup in auto production recently. But one cannot look to the housing and construction or the carpeting market for any signs of improvement, not until the economy starts picking up at least. Whatever be the outcome, PP will remain a viable product in the long term, particularly due to its specific properties that make it the material of choice for most of its applications.
