SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(Renesas Electronics America Inc., the premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, and Grid2Home, a leading software communications company, reiterated their dedication to continued collaboration on the creation of Smart Energy Protocol (SEP) 2.0-compliant solutions. In an industry-first move, the companies have ported SEP 2.0 to Renesas’ microcontrollers (MCUs) and multiple PHYs (IEEE802.15.4 RF, IEEE802.11b RF and NB-FSK PLC (SAE J 2931/2) frequency shift keying (FSK), and power line communication (PLC). Grid2Home was a key developer of the SEP 2.0 energy alliance standard specification, widely adopted by industry leaders and a forthcoming industry requirement. Renesas’ partnership with Grid2Home resulted in Renesas’ first-to-market advantage in SEP 2.0-compliant products for the smart vehicle, smart meter, smart appliance and home area network (HAN) markets.)--
“This partnership encourages the development of technology solutions that will interact more efficiently, safely and intuitively than previously possible.”
“SEP 2.0 will enable smart devices such as appliances, electric vehicles, solar panels and wind turbines to communicate with one another within the HAN and ultimately back to the energy utility,” said Mike Bourton, founder and vice president of business development at Grid2Home. “This partnership encourages the development of technology solutions that will interact more efficiently, safely and intuitively than previously possible.”
Grid2Home has been active in helping Renesas participate in proof-of-concept designs and mutual customer engagements. Co-developed demonstrations include a Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PEV) and Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) communication exhibition, and a smart meter to In-Home-Display (IHD) and Programmable Communication Thermostat (PCT) communication presentation.
“Grid2Home has been a key driver in the development of SEP2.0, which will be a common requirement for any device in the HAN, including smart meters and appliances,” said Ritesh Tyagi, senior director, Microcontroller Products & Solutions Marketing, Renesas Electronics America. “SEP 2.0 running over multiple PHYs is required in order for Renesas to offer complete and competitive solutions, and we’re pleased to have this first-mover advantage.”
Amrit Vivekanand, senior director, Automotive Business Unit, Renesas Electronics America, added, “As EVs become more prevalent, it is essential to charge them responsibly and efficiently to minimize disruption to the electric grid and use less power. Renesas’ SEP 2.0 solutions will enable this intelligent charging process by communicating between the vehicle, EVSE and smart energy meter.”
