SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Twitch, the world’s largest video platform and community for gamers, today announced its community has rallied to raise more than $1.5 million collectively through the broadcasting of video game content on Twitch. Illustrating a new outlet for philanthropists while promoting the appeal of gaming as a spectator sport, charities and their independent supporters have hosted marathon game play sessions to raise donations for their cause including the American Cancer Society, Doctors Without Borders, Habitat for Humanity, Child’s Play and the American Red Cross. Beyond hosting a multitude of these successful charity streams, Twitch will contribute promotional support to Extra Life 2012, the biggest one-day gaming charity event of the year.

Since 2008, Extra Life 2012 has been conducting 24-hour gaming marathons in support of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals®. In hopes of broadening their success, on October 20, many Extra Life 2012 participants will broadcast their marathon via Twitch. Twitch will also provide complimentary ads to drive registration, as well as a strong presence on Twitch’s homepage and alerts through Twitch’s social media channels. With the Twitch community, now more than 20 million gamers and spectators strong, the increased visibility on the site is expected to drive significant traffic to the marathon.
Adding to the appeal of Extra Life 2012, Fearless Records and Razer will offer playing time with band members from Pierce The Veil, blessthefall, The Word Alive, A Skylit Drive, Forever The Sickest Kids, and For All Those Sleeping as prizes to top donors, while Twitch will run a stream of the members during the charity drive.
