Bingham Memorial Hospital Holds Seventh Annual Brake for Breakfast Event

Breast Cancer Awareness Event Draws Thousands of Area Residents

BLACKFOOT, Idaho--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Bingham Memorial Hospital held its annual Brake for Breakfast event yesterday, handing out breast cancer awareness information alongside free breakfast to more than three thousand area residents. Set up to allow women to stop quickly on their way to work or dropping off children at school, Brake for Breakfast is now in its seventh year of bringing critical information to women throughout the region.

“Millions of families every year are impacted by breast cancer,” said Louis Kraml, chief executive officer, Bingham Memorial Hospital. “We began this event seven years ago in honor of breast cancer awareness month as a reminder of the importance of women’s health and early cancer screenings. This is a wonderful occasion for us to spread the word and we are so pleased at the level of participation this year with more than three thousand women receiving this information.”

Local residents drove past the hospital and first stopped at “Breakfast Junction,” where they received a free breakfast consisting of low-fat yogurt, apple slices, a muffin and orange juice, all without getting out of their car. The next stop was “Information Way,” where Bingham Memorial physicians took a moment to remind those in attendance about the importance of yearly screenings and mammograms for women 40 years and older. This year, Dr. Heather Pugmire, Bingham’s new Ob-Gyn physician, was on hand to greet passers-by. Finally, participants stopped at “Pink Place,” where they received pink novelty items to remind them and others about the fight against breast cancer.

“As physicians, whenever we get the opportunity to get the word out about early detection, we take it. This is one of those great moments,” said Dr. Rebecca Gill, Bingham Memorial general surgeon who specializes in breast cancer surgery. “Early detection is key for the best possible outcomes when it comes to breast cancer. We hope each of those that participated in the event today will not only keep current on their screenings, but share the message with their friends and family.”

Participants also received free health information, including screening FAQs and information about self-examinations, provided by the American Cancer Society.
