University Bike Share Program Helps Wellesley College Become a Greener Campus

BRISTOL, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--On Bike Share(OBS) and Wellesley College have launched a campus bike share system designed to make bicycling an integral part of campus life. In conjunction with Wellesley, OBS designed and configured a cost effective system to meet the schools sustainability needs by combining a series of innovations tailored specifically for campus environments.

“Wellesley had successfully experimented with a basic system utilizing abandoned bikes, which were tuned and distributed across campus,” said David Boyce, co-founder of On Bike Share. “It clearly indicated that there was interest, but Wellesley recognized that they needed a more structured system that provides automated bike access 24-hours a day with detailed reports on usage.”

Together with the Office of Sustainability, the students at Wellesley selected On Bike Share to deliver the new system. “On Bike Share allows users to check out bikes in four simple steps,” said Patrick Willoughby, Wellesley’s Sustainability Director. “Once someone is registered into the program, which is free of charge, students, faculty and staff can simply swipe their ID card, get a key, unlock the bike, and ride it anywhere on or off campus”.

OBS bikes feature Dynamic Bicycles shaft drive technology, Shimano internal gearing, and an integrated key locking solution from Morse Watchmans, to simplify setup, usage, and maintenance. By working with the world leaders in chainless bikes, internal gearing, and key locking technology, OBS has created a bike share system designed to meet the simplicity, flexibility and budget needs of universities.

According to Willoughby, “Wellesley’s system looks to address many of the most difficult issues facing campuses today. We are constantly looking for ways to reduce carbon emissions and parking congestion, while providing a sustainable transportation alternative, which improves well-being and morale on campus. If this program is well received and utilized we hope to put another Bike Share station on the other side of campus.” The bike share program was made possible by a generous gift from the Class of 1957.
