TerraEchos Licenses Navy Technology to Enhance Kairos(TM) Security Solution

Bayesian Algorithm Improves Signal Classification Performance

Esri International User Conference 2012

MISSOULA, Mont.--()--TerraEchos Inc. has licensed the Bayesian Data Reduction Algorithm (BDRA) and foundational patents from the U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center to enhance the real-time signal analysis and classification capabilities of the Kairos™ technology platform.

“The Navy’s Bayesian algorithm is a very powerful statistical methodology for classification of digital signals,” said Dr. Alex Philp, TerraEchos Founder and CTO. “The BDRA adds tremendous value to our Kairos solution by enabling it to better analyze specific data and determine what it is – instantly.”

Dr. Philp announced the BDRA licensing agreement at the Esri International User Conference in San Diego, Calif., where the Missoula, Mont., firm is providing live demonstrations in booth D125 today through Thursday, July 26, 2012.

Kairos™ is a real-time analytical processing platform that leverages IBM InfoSphere Streams technology to consume and instantly analyze enormous volumes and varieties of data streaming at high speed from multiple sources. Kairos™ filters and extracts actionable information in a real-time workflow to meet mission critical defense and intelligence requirements.

For example, TerraEchos utilized the analytical power of the BDRA algorithm for classifying digital acoustic signal as part of a joint US Navy – Department of Energy security program. Working to integrate the BDRA as a Kairos™ extension, Philp said the Kairos™ “discovery engine” can now analyze unstructured audio data streaming at rates of 300 megabits per second and classify these “sounds” in 1/14th of a second. “What used to be an out-of-process calculation taking minutes is now a real-time process in compute memory, allowing our customers to get the answers they need now, while the intelligence is still meaningful, flowing continuously” adds Philp.

“Through Kairos™, our goal is to offer our clientele a diverse portfolio of real-time analytical processing capabilities that can be deployed in a variety of applications, workflows and business processes related to managing big data in motion,” said Philp. “We are privileged to have worked with the Naval Undersea Warfare Center on applying BDRA technology and look forward to building on this technology-sharing relationship in the future.”

For the past three years, TerraEchos has worked with the U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, RI, to test and evaluate the patented Bayesian Data Reduction Algorithms for use in security applications. With the addition of the BDRA signal classification functionality, Kairos™ is able to answer the who, what, where, when and why questions associated with identifying, and responding appropriately to, potential cyber and physical threats against critical infrastructure.

“Establishing relationships with small businesses, such as TerraEchos Inc., promotes commercial use of federally funded research and development, as supported by a number of U.S. government statutes,” said Dr. Theresa A. Baus, Head of the Technology Partnerships Office at the U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center. “Businesses obtain vetted technologies for incorporation into existing or future products. The nation as a whole benefits from the jobs and revenues created by these enterprises.”

TerraEchos focuses on markets in which customers have critical needs for instantaneous detection and response to potential threats. Examples include U.S. Defense and Intelligence mission objectives, energy smart grids, nuclear facilities, pipeline networks, and other forms of critical infrastructure. Earlier this year, TerraEchos received seed investment from Flywheel Ventures and True Ventures, with investment participation from S&K Technologies, a Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribally Owned Company, and GCS Research.
